On NY-23, I'm with Fred Thompson and Jack Fowler: A Conservative can win in a three-way race, and Doug Hoffman is deserving of your support.
Newt really needs to re-think his support for Dede Scozzafava. This isn't RINO but DIABLO - Democrat In All But Label Only. It's not one of those "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" bi-swinger deals not when you're pro-"stimulus", pro-cash-for-clunkers. And the reductive argument that her sole redeeming value - a willingness to vote for John Boehner as Speaker is reason enough to support her is silly in a special election. If he's ever Speaker, Boehner won't be till January 2011, and it's 12 months premature for Newt to be telling voters they need to suck it up and accept that a handful of Jim-Jeffords-in-embryo-form are necessary for the Republican tide.
But beyond all that there's now a competence issue: Since the cop-calling and its aftermath, the candidate has demonstrated that there is no case for her whatsoever. At this stage in the nation's affairs, Washington doesn't need another incoherent buffoon insulated by a phalanx of thin-skinned twerps already guarding her like a 30-year incumbent for whom routine questions are an outrageous form of lèse-majesté. By any reasonable measure, this candidate is unworthy of a seat in the national legislature.
The tea parties and town halls were a response not just to Obama but to the 2006/2008 GOP. If Dede Scozzafava wins, it's a loss a serious loss for those voters who believe irresponsible spending by feckless federal mediocrities will deny future generations any shot at the American Dream. If Doug Hoffman wins, as I believe he can, great. But, if he doesn't and the seat falls to the Dem, it will be a cautionary tale for party leaders who, as in NY-23, make choices that confirm everything a disgruntled base thinks of them.
I contributed to Hoffman’s campaign yesterday, and I haven’t contributed to the RNC in 3 years (I am from Oklahoma so I have no local interest.) I’ll be damned if I ever vote for another Rino, especially if Gingrich is pushing it (remember, he climbed on a couch with Pelosi to promote Climate Change Legislation. Do we need him? I think not.
Good for ALL of them!
Exactly how is that redeeming?
I read Rep. Boehner's op-ed contribution in USA Today this weekend (note that their lead editorial blaming both parties was actually quite refreshing...I kid y'all NOT!) in which he claimed that the GOP establishment had "learned its lesson."
Clearly, the ongoing Scozzafava episode illustrates otherwise, and either Boehner is an idiot or a liar or both.
Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.
Scozzafava also holds these positions:
Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.
This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” libeRal democRat.
There are also 17 RINOs in the house who have donated funds to this LibeRal democRat's campaign. They include Boehner and Cantor. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These unprincipled RINO enablers should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year.

I support Doug Hoffman for Congress (PayPal). Please, spread the word about this important election on November 3, 2009 in New York’s 23rd congressional district. |
What is that district like....Gay? BLACK? UNION? HILLBILLY? If any of these, it’s going to the Democrats.
From what I can tell, none of the above.

In a fair, straight up race, Hoffman would be their guy.
In 2008, the district went to John McHugh, a relatively conservative Republican with a 71.55% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union and an 82% cumulative rating from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. McHugh won this district with over 65% of the vote. McCain lost this district. Possibly the message last year was RINO=No, Conservative=Yes.
Money and advertising are really distorting the polls this year, and could distort the results.
The candidate selection is also very strange. The Dems have run a relatively conservative “Blue Dog” type of candidate. The Republicans have the flaming leftist. And Doug Hoffman, the Conservative is closest to McHugh on the issues.
One of the reasons Markos Moulitsas endorsed her was because he didn’t want another blue dog for Pelosi and company to have to compromise with. The fact that Scozzafava has signed on to much of the Pelosi agenda is even better for him.
There are apparently 17 Scozzafava enablers in the House. The list includes Boehner, Cantor, Sessions, Hensarling, Brown-Waite and McCotter. We will have to check the FEC filings to find out about the others. Also, Susan Collins, Senator from Maine will be campaigning for Scozzafava this weekend.

Not only Newt, but Boehner, Cantor, support Dede Schizzo....which should tell you that the GOP is nothing more than DNC-lite....and REAL Conservatives never willy-nilly vote for someone because they have an R next to their name

A few days ago on FR, I referred to her as “Arlen-Specter-in-waiting”, rather than the Jeffords comparison.
This is indeed a special race, and I might be going upstate
even though I live in Bergen County NJ. I have always been ambivalent about Gingrich, while still respecting him, but if he continues to cling to his endorsement of this woman, his residual popularity with “the Base” will start to evaporate, probably permanently.

That sums it up
Historically Republican (since 1870’s). In 2006 the rats won a state senate seat in the area that had been GOP just as long.
GOP Registration edge.
Narrow Obama carry in 2008.
Narrow Bush carry in 2004 and 2000.
I'd love to know the details of this program. Do they hand out certificates of achievement on graduation day?
sorry, i replied to the wrong thread
Can argue with your take on that. Boehner should know better than to make that argument after the endorsement of Scozzafava.
It’s discouraging because there some folks in D.C. you’d like to back, but underneath it all, they display a complete lack of understanding on matters of Conservatism.
Good grief! It’s like the Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
It’s getting to the point that when they cover Republican leaders, they ought to do it with a fish-eye lense and an oooo eeee oooo sound track.
