GOP Congressman: Scozzafava ‘Has to Win’
Washington Independent ^ | 0/21/09 4:41 PM | David Weigel

I ran into Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.), the fourth-ranking member of the House Republican leadership, before this morning’s Big Government press conference — he had intended to speak, but had to run out early. McCotter is one of the relatively few House Republicans who’s come out for GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava in the NY-23 special election; I asked him why.

Up 5 points on the generic ballot question.
There was a very interesting poll within the last week. I can’t find it in my history. It was a “generic ballot” poll, but they gave 3 choices, Republican, Democrat, and Independent/3rd party. They also asked party affiliation the same way. On that, about 10% of Democrats and about 20% of Repubicans favored the generic Independent/3rd party, and (IIRC) the generic Independent/3rd party had about a 45% plurality of those who identified themselves as “Independents”

I support Doug Hoffman for Congress (PayPal).

Please, spread the word about this important election on November 3, 2009 in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

Thanks.... Seems the dynamics maybe changing in Hoffman’s favor. Another question: Does this special election require a majority to win or just be the leader at the end of voting day? I apologize for asking these questions but I’m not familiar with this race and why the seat is open.

I think it’s quite likely the GOP will lose the seat.

She ran on the WFP line because she was unopposed in several races so the WFP just gave the line to her its not like she was competing against a Democratic candidate for the ballot line.

And there are other reasons why she is not as liberal as potrayed to be.

On the Albany Project, a Democratic Party leaning blog they list all the non-progressive votes she made in the last few years that angered them. Here is a summary:

- Scozzafava voted against the Farmworkers Bill of Rights that passed the Assembly. This was seen as a pro-labor and pro-worker bill to support farm laborers who face unpleasant conditions in some instances.

- Among the many areas, one area that Scozzafava seems to have a consistent record of voting “no” in is housing. This year, the Assembly has passed 20 pieces of legislation related to housing. Of those 20 bills, Scozzafava voted against several of them. The bills she voted against include: A rent increase cap, rent increases linked to inflation rate, Section 8 housing being included in rent regulation, landlord rental unit recovery, affordable housing preservation, excessive rent increase shield and expansion of the Loft Law.

Just like MD-1 or MI-7, Nancy Pelosi is ecstatic due to us in-fighting making it easy for her to retain the speakership. I could understand us doing primary fights in Utah or South Carolina, but in Blue states we should let it be.

The response I sent to Thaddeus McCotter

_______________________________________

Dear Sir,

Your support and the support of other Congressional Republicans for Dede Scozzafava is the reason why the general Republican population no longer trusts the Republican “Leadership”. And it is why I no longer financially contribute to the RNC. I send my money to individual candidates who represent my values. Because of this, I and those I can influence to do the same are contributing to the Doug Hoffman campaign.

Has anybody heard any word about Michael Steele and his role (or lack of it) in this sordid selection of a candidate??? You know, him. The “RNC” Chairman? Is he still Chairman? - or is he taken up being a radio talk show host full time?

I wonder if he (or any ‘leaders’ from the House for that matter) intercede with those 11-12 ‘bozo’ NY-23 Republican committee chairmen on voting for an actual “Republican”???

Isn’t the RNC chairman supposed to be ‘recruiting’ actual Republicans?

What in the hell is going on???

Even if supporting Hoffman puts a Dim in the seat ... it’s better to know the nature of the enemy, then to wonder how your friend will screw you today.

There wasn’t a primary in this case—the GOP candidate was hand-picked by state and local GOP leaders, reportedly blessed by the national GOP.

Hoffman vied to be the GOP candidate, but was passed over in favor of the leftist Scozzafava. He then decided to run on the Conservative line, but is still registered republican.

It’s not a primary freakin’ fight! Did you even read the history here (Scozzafava nominated by Party Chairmen’ dictate, not “primary”), and even so HAVE you even heard some of her positions? Pro-Abortion, Pro-Bank Bailouts, Pro-”Card Check”, Pro-Gay Marriage, Pro-Tax Increases..? Pro Cap & Tax? These alone are enough to disqualify a candidate from being a Republican Congressional nominee, IMO.

There was no primary. She is an Assembly Woman friend of a Pubbie county chair that got forced through.

It isn't so much that Hoffman has to win - although that would be nice. Schifosa must be defeated. That's the real bottom line.

And after Schifosa goes down, everybody - and I mean everybody - that had anything to do with this travesty has to go, too.

Now 2010 is approaching, and they aren't even starting to get their act together.

The Republicans are finished. THEY are the third party.

Normal Americans are the second party.

Until there are 218 Members of Congress who are not Republicans OR Democrats, nothing will change.

Well, I’ve been mentioning the possibility that the Republican party is finished. I mean really finished. They’ve had a run of 150 years, and that’s about as long as any party lasts.

But we won’t get a replacement until a few real heavies throw their weight behind it. For instance, if Sarah Palin is refused a shot at the 2012 presidency by the RINO leadership, because they are worried about their personal control of the party. Sarah MIGHT have the kind of leadership appeal to lead a successful effort to establish a new major party. But she would also need the support of at least a few Republican leaders who risked their political lives to back the new party.

That’s how the Republicans replaced the Whigs. Not a third party protest vote, but a new party taking over from a decadent and dying party.

I don’t know if that will happen or not. But it looks at least as probable as the alternative, that the Republican leadership will suddenly find some principles and some common sense.

In their own self interest you would think they would get a clue. But they seem to be utterly clueless.

Is this a state law that makes the party appoint the nominee or can the NY GOP change the rules and make a caucus instead? I would support a caucus. Even though I agree with 1 out of 5 of those liberal views, perhaps the NY GOP and the RNC should encourage her to pull out in exchange for increased funding for a NY State Senate campaign perhaps or maybe an opportunity for her to improve her views and become more acceptable to the base in case if she wants to be promoted 4-6 years from now.

At least in California we are fortunate to have a primary at least for special elections.

Redstate.com and the dailykos both agree on the right and left that she has ran a screwed up campaign and maybe she should pull out and endorse Hoffman.

The NY Conservative Party is running Hoffman, and it is a viable party. In fact, James Buckley, Bill Buckley’s brother, won a U.S. Senate seat in the 70’s, as a NYS Conservative Party candidate.

Doug Hoffman is not a politician. He’s a CPA, and with his family, runs 23 businesses.

Mark Levin doesn’t usually endorse third party candidates, but take a look:

“Mark Endorses, the Conservative, Hoffman for Congress
Monday, October 19th, 2009”

http://www.marklevinshow.com/home.asp

I also heard Laura Ingraham interview Hoffman. Plus, Michele Backmann endorsed him. He’s got the good guys on his side.

I don’t know, I am not from NY, I just know that it happened that way in this particular race.
