There's something the Democratic lawmakers who are pushing cap-and-trade legislation don't want the public to know. The controversial climate-change legislation winding its way through Congress will impose a massive new national gas tax on the American people. We discovered this by analyzing what the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill would do to gas prices and what Americans spend on gasoline, diesel and jet fuels. We found that cap-and-trade legislation will levy a $3.6 trillion gas-tax increase that will impact every American and important segments of our economy.
Americans travel more than 200 million vehicle miles each month, and annually we spend nearly $1.2 trillion on gasoline and oil. The average household spends 5 percent of its annual budget on fuel. For many, gasoline is a mandatory expense. And this legislation disproportionately hits middle and lower income households that tend to have longer commutes to work and must drive in order to work. These families will be hit especially hard by the projected $1 per gallon increase for the additional gas tax the cap-and-trade legislation will bring.

Government is awesome, I mean, what would we do without it?
At least we are safe from global warming now. Whew, what a relief...
Sheesh, how many Americans understand this, and that whatever we do with emissions, etc. will not do squat to the global climate?
A majority, and more every day. "Global warming" (or climate change, or whatever the newest PC term is) is rapidly losing ground with the public. One can only hope that this translates into Democrat losses in 2010.
These taxes won’t matter. When Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchisen gets her way with amnesty, there won’t be jobs left for Americans. We’ll all be on welfare.
what about gasoline that is refined overseas
and imported?
Imagine the anger of the American people as they can no longer afford to heat or air condition their homes and they are standing in long lines for a ration of $4+ per gallon gasoline. What will members of Congress tell their constituents? If they think the anger they saw at the town hall meetings this summer was bad, worse is yet to come.
No kidding. Remember when gas got up to 4.50 and folks cut back on their consumption of gasoline? Then, unintended consequences here, state and local tax plunder went down. The pirates that tax gasoline started whining about their tax take was down. This tax is designed to force (there’s that word again) the American taxpayer into eco death trap clown cars. Then, the higher milage cars are stopping at the gas pump less, meaning less taxes. These morons are going to impose a federal tax and lessen the amount of taxes taken in by the states and locals. Then they will use that income to fund fairy/pixie dust bs wind and solar projects. These people are educated WAY beyond their intelligence.
Thanks for the heads up, Grumpybutt
Is this new TAX a national tax plus they will add the global TAX after Dec. 7th? Or is this the global tax?
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Ping! Another tax hidden in Democrat Party legislation.
Sorry, but the democrat base wants more free stuff. Someone has to work to pay for it.
Now, turn off your computer, you slacker, and get back to work. The base is getting hungry (And don't even think about supporting you own family first. Ain't gonna happen.)
And we're also going to have to pay for the increased cost of welfare recipients (Utilities, food, medicine). Their bills will go up as well, and we have to pay those - before we pay for our own.
I believe this is part of “Cap n tax”. The Waxman-Markey bill...
"The president was clear during the campaign about his commitment on not raising taxes on middle-class families," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday afternoon. "I don't think any economist would believe that, in the environment that we're in, that raising taxes on middle-class families would make any sense."
“Not only will cap and tax boost gasoline taxes, but will also boost electric rates by nearly 50%. Imagine the effect on food prices when higher fuel prices and higher electric rates are added in.”
Don’t forget Pelosi’s dream of a VAT that will then be a tax on these taxes.
Mmmmm MMMMMMM mmmmmmmm
