I agree with you on the stakes. Petraeus is reported to have described himself as a Rockefeller Republican.

Not sure why people assume a general without any political experience or revealed philosophy is the the answer.

That’s what I don’t understand. If you agree with the Democrats, why not join them?

And of course that begs the question why back them if you’re the Republican leadership?

What’s the difference in this and the CEO of Ford telling his directors and employees to only buy GM cars?

Either you want your brand to be successful and grow or you don’t.

Steyn has “discovered” the virtues of limited government and suspicion of executive power only since Obama took office. Before that, he was one of the biggest defenders of Bush’s expansive, anti-civil liberty pro-government policies. Why should he be taken seriously now?

Clearly you have not read "America Alone". Mark was clearly for limited government at home but an aggressive stance abroad, and he still is, as far as I can tell.

I liked this commentary by Stein from todays NRO The Corner:

Enough [Mark Steyn] On NY-23, I'm with Fred Thompson and Jack Fowler: A Conservative can win in a three-way race, and Doug Hoffman is deserving of your support.

Newt really needs to re-think his support for Dede Scozzafava. This isn't RINO but DIABLO - Democrat In All But Label Only. It's not one of those "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" bi-swinger deals — not when you're pro-"stimulus", pro-cash-for-clunkers. And the reductive argument that her sole redeeming value - a willingness to vote for John Boehner as Speaker — is reason enough to support her is silly in a special election. If he's ever Speaker, Boehner won't be till January 2011, and it's 12 months premature for Newt to be telling voters they need to suck it up and accept that a handful of Jim-Jeffords-in-embryo-form are necessary for the Republican tide.

But beyond all that there's now a competence issue: Since the cop-calling and its aftermath, the candidate has demonstrated that there is no case for her whatsoever. At this stage in the nation's affairs, Washington doesn't need another incoherent buffoon insulated by a phalanx of thin-skinned twerps already guarding her like a 30-year incumbent for whom routine questions are an outrageous form of lèse-majesté. By any reasonable measure, this candidate is unworthy of a seat in the national legislature.

The tea parties and town halls were a response not just to Obama but to the 2006/2008 GOP. If Dede Scozzafava wins, it's a loss — a serious loss — for those voters who believe irresponsible spending by feckless federal mediocrities will deny future generations any shot at the American Dream. If Doug Hoffman wins, as I believe he can, great. But, if he doesn't and the seat falls to the Dem, it will be a cautionary tale for party leaders who, as in NY-23, make choices that confirm everything a disgruntled base thinks of them.

I missed this yesterday. I was about to repost it.

9YearLurker wrote:
And while I’m still firmly in the ‘Reform the GOP’ camp, I can understand those who have given up on it.
I’m with you on the “reform the GOP” approach. But they have to understand there are consequences for this kind of stupidity. And in this race, a Hoffman victory should be possible. In a race like this, in a district like this, if the Republicans are stuck on stupid, I do think conservatives should play to win.
MrB wrote:
Question - why didn’t someone challenge this RINO in the primaries?
There was no primary for this race. The parties selected their candidate for this special election to fill the vacancy when John McHugh was named Secretary of the Army.

Doug Hoffman is the Conservative alternative in this race (or Hoffman by PayPal).

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” libeRal democRat.

There are also 17 RINOs in the house who have donated funds to this LibeRal democRat's campaign. They include Boehner and Cantor. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These unprincipled RINO enablers should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year.

More threads ...
From the desk of
cc2k:
I support Doug Hoffman for Congress (PayPal).

Please, spread the word about this important election on November 3, 2009 in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

Just goes to show that the East Coast RINOs would rather lose than have a conservative win.

BTTT!

The only thing is frankly for all of us to joint the assembly movement, retake the party from within...only vote for assembly candidates....and get the word out about the "Establishment".

I can't believe that the RNC sent these fools $650,000 and that Newt actually endorsed her.

I can. They did ZERO background checks.

And when confronted with her KOZ connections...instead of dropping her like a hot potato...they dig in their heels...

If you mean by “consistent conservative” that he was a consistent critic of Bush’s big government policies (both in the area of economic and civil liberty), I’d appreciate some examples.

You’re going to have to tell me things that Steyn has not supported that you think he should have supported. He is a columnist and not a politician. He writes articles. He doesn’t vote in a legislature.

Which subjects are you concerned that he has written the wrong things on? We can’t very well discuss what he hasn’t written on.

His main offense was not writing “wrong things” about Bush’s big government policies but ignoring them (which is even worse). If you want to take him seriously now that he is criticizing Obama’s similar policies, that is your choice.
