The GOP is afraid of shaking up their current order of things. The few who are still in power are more interested in holding onto that power. They don't want new conservative "upstarts" upsetting their apple cart.

The GOP selected Dede Scozzafava so they could have someone in the (R) column. Doug Hoffman, her opponent on the right, is a conservative in the (C) column. He’s on the November ballot, but so is the (D).
