The defeat of communism 20 years ago was the most liberating moment in history. So why don't we talk about it more?
On August 23, 1989, officials from the newly reformed and soon-to-be-renamed Communist Party of Hungary ceased policing the country's militarized border with Austria. Some 13,000 East Germans, many of whom had been vacationing at nearby Lake Balaton, fled across the frontier to the free world. It was the largest breach of the Iron Curtain in a generation, and it kicked off a remarkable chain of events that ended 11 weeks later with the righteous citizen dismantling of the Berlin Wall...

It isn’t defeated yet! They just changed tactics!
Thanks for the link.
Unfortunately it has come up through the sewers of DC and has reemerged in the White House and Capital Building. Remember when they talked so much about the "Peace Dividend"? Funds which had been used to fight the cold war were probably redirected to fund programs which addicted people to the socialist idea. We should have never let down our guard.
I reread it three times and am still confused.
Not only are communists running Washington but the Chinese communists also hold most of our debt (Thanks, Bushes) so they can shut down our economy any time they want to.
Barack promised “fundamentally transforming” the U.S.A., and clearly he intends to act in accordance with his basic personal philosophical precepts. Frank Davis would have been, and Wm. Ayers will be so proud.
What makes you think that it was defeated? Have you been watching the ObamaNation in Washington lately?

“I agree. It was a liberating event, but our victory was absolutely squandered. 20 years later, and were living in an era that might reasonably be called The Totalitarian Moment.”
I think this nails it. Communism (as a global, militaristic and agressively nationalistic force) WAS defeated — trounced, in fact. The West did the same thing to Islam in the First Crusade. But, just like the First Crusade, after victory, instead of going for the jugular the West just lost interest and went about it’s self indulgent way and allowed it’s enemies to transmogrify and grow. Just like we have seen the emergence of a resurgent Islam, Communism survived, bided it’s time and found other ways to plot their revenge and our demise. All that time and all that effort and all that money and all those lives — wasted. What our enemies could not defeat from without, they have patiently watched rot and have infliltrated from within.
the most liberating moment in history happened approximately 2000 years ago
And clowns like you three can only make snarky comments when your country is responsible for the liberation of millions. It is a unique skill. Congratulations.

Thanks for posting. It reminds me that there is no paid up dues card for freedom. To think that twenty years ago the Communist empire dissolved and in America now we are close to jumping into Socialism!

20 years ago the collapse of Soviet Union occurred, and Eastern Bloc countries were freed from them, but that doesn’t mean that the ideology has been defeated. There are still very sizeable human populations living under communist governments, and the ideology has been making considerable inroads in Latin America. There’s even been one (so far) self-proclaimed communist found serving in the current executive branch of our own government. I guess you’ve just got a broader definition of the word ‘defeated’ than we clowns do.
IMHO, I don't think the money hungry Chicoms will do anything to devalue their investments in the U.S. How is that in their interest?
“The Unknown War: The defeat of communism 20 years ago was the most liberating moment in history...”
And who will defeat communism HERE a few years from now?
