Sarkozy says no more French troops

UPI) -- President Nicolas Sarkozy of France says he wants to see victory in Afghanistan but has no plans to send more French troops to that country.

Speaking to the Le Figaro newspaper, the French leader said he believes there should be a build-up of more Afghan troops, CNN reported.

As for staying on in Afghanistan, Sarkozy told the newspaper: "I answer yes -- and stay to win.

"But France will not send one more soldier," he added. "My belief is that more Afghan soldiers are needed. It is them who will be the most efficient to win this war because it is their country."

About 3,070 French troops, part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, are in Afghanistan.

Britain announced plans this week to send an additional 500 soldiers, raising its Afghan troop strength to 9,500. The United States, which will have 68,000 troops in the country by year's end, is considering another troop surge there.

I really think that educating the poor people of Afghanistan (especially the girls/women) will go a long ways towards undermining the male dominated Islamic fundamentalist power structure so prevalent in that part of the world. In so doing, our long term goals are realized, i.e. support for a stable democratic government triumphs over Sharia based Islamofascist militarism. By heavily educating their women, we undermine the underlying power structure. These women, once liberated from the various shackles of their oppression, will NOT allow this country to step back into the Sharia mentality. Empowered by their intellect, they will be a force to be reckoned with. We must start with the children and see their education through even if it means bringing them to America and GIVING them free rides to our most prestigious universities. just my opinion of course.

He’s right. I wouldn’t send another soldier either as long as our sissy-in-chief is “crafting the strategy” there. Who wants to be on the side that loses?

You realize, the French Foreign Legion was not composed of Frenchmen.

> to France is “I wouldn’t send troops either” yet we
> aren’t calling for immediate withdrawal of our own
> guys. WTF?

As long as we have a “President” who is playing to lose, I think we should bring back every last American from overseas.

“We must start with the children and see their education through even if it means bringing them to America and GIVING them free rides to our most prestigious universities. just my opinion of course.”

What and displace all of the illegals going to school instead of our own children? How does that work? Isn’t that a little like proposing free health care to everyone without increasing the number of clinics and doctors? Feels all warm and fuzzy, but not too practical, no?

Don’t kid yourself - success or failure in Afghanistan is not predicated on the number of additional troops France will or won’t send. It’s predicated on our strategy and on our will to win. The military (France’s or ours) is not the problem, of course - our “leadership” is the problem.

do you blame them I don’t, our best ally the UK is losing more and more soldiers out there while the so called media cover it up.

I don’t blame any of our allies after the way obama has treated them and then treated those who hate us

"Do the people of Afghanistan deserve liberty?"

Interesting question. Of course all humans are born deserving liberty. Some surrender it, either through breaching a social contract which results in their incarceration, while others more subtly prop up and empower those who ultimately revoke it. Even our founders recognized that while all men philosophically 'deserve' liberty, the only ones who would pragmatically get to enjoy it were those willing to make a stand on its behalf.

correct the left wanted to be liked but they were really saying is that they care not for our allies and those who lose their men and women but would rather those who hate us like us .

The way he has treated our allies is disgusting and the way the so called media have done nothing but cover for him is sickening

When a principled general is willing to stand up and be counted, then I’m going to listen to what he has to say.

I would agree if the generals would also demand a change in the rules of engagement. We need to win this war and sending more troops to be shot at before we can shoot and then only if civilians won't be hurt is not a winning strategy.

Kill the enemy, destroy their bases (if these are mosques so be it) and any civilians they are hiding behind. I'm sorry for the civilians, but if you don't want to be killed don't hang around terrorists.

Congress isn't too concerned with the war. $2.6 billion was recently diverted from guns and ammunition for troops to pay for politicians’ pet projects.

At the same time weapons are malfunctioning and soldiers are dying. The money should be in developing more reliable weapons if it's not going directly to the troops.

That’s a finger in the eye of Obama. Sarkozy doesn’t like him. It’s obvious Carla doesn’t like MO either.
