Interracial couple denied marriage license in Tangipahoa Parish [Louisiana]

A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with black people and white people, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

These statements are outrageous. Obama Sr. stayed with Jr's mom for at least a few weeks. I know full black marriages that don't even last minutes.

Course, it is true that in Louisiana, half black kids aren't treated well. They will most likely grow up washing dishes instead of POTUS.

I wonder if he’s only against black/white marriages. What about white/asian? Etc?

I would understand if the judge didn’t want to perform the marriage, but to not sign something after the couple was already legitimately married is crazy. That’s his duty.

Without reading the full article, I assuming he's referring to interracial marriage as between blacks and non-blacks.

What about Asians and non-asians? Or would he have a problem with folks like Vietnam vets marrying indigenous women from their country?

The JOP gave up his “freedom” to discriminate when he took the job, and presumably swore an oath to uphold the law.

I am pro-life, but if I took a job as an abortionist, I couldn't claim it violates my conscience and expect to be paid for not doing my job.

If a vegetarian, animal rights activist takes a job in a slaughterhouse, would he have a right to not do his job of slaughtering animals, and keep his job?

If a JOP is anti-interracial marriage, he is in the wrong profession, as one of his duties is to marry interracial couples.

If this JOP wants to be a bigoted, racist fool on his own time, that is his business. When the taxpayers are paying him to marry eligible couples, he needs to either put aside his twisted beliefs, and do his job, or resign.

Well, he is clearly a relic from a time gone by. :)

I once applied for a job as a butcher.

"Why did he become a Republican???"

I'm shocked that CNN didn't put the fact that he is a Republican in the article. I'm SURE that when the story breaks more wildly, everyone will mention his party affiliation - even if the GOP has never endorsed him for any prior office. And, with the fact that he just recently switched parties, I'm sure the GOP probably hasn't.

Who knew that the Cloris Leachman character (Ida) on Malcolm in the Middle really existed?

"Why did he become a Republican???"

He changed after Obama, the product of an interracial union, was elected. I'm guessing that had a little something to do with it.
