Fort Collins boy in loose aircraft (6 yr old boy found hiding at home not in balloon)
Denver Post ^ | October 15, 2009 | Kieran Nicholson

Rescuers are tracking and chasing a "homemade flying saucer" that is in flight with a 6-year-old, by himself, on board.

The incident started this morning in Fort Collins when the boy got into the balloon-like device, which was built by an adult, and it came loose from a tether, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

The contraption could rise as high as 10,000 feet, the sheriff's office said.

The home-made flying saucer was last seen in flight over Weld County.

The sheriff's office is working the Federal Aviation Administration to determine how to best get the boy down.

The homemade airplane was tethered in Fort Collins when the boy got onboard and it floated away. (Lisa Ecklund via 9News)

A 30 year old man fell from a 6 story parking garage in Austin in April. He is in veg-like condition. His wife was 8 months pg at the time and she has since had baby but her husband is in a nursing home. I pray daily for this young couple Keith and Judy Beasley.

I did essentially the same thing (except with my father’s rifle from the reserves) and in the kitchen.

Had to find the keys AND the combination to get to it.

I know this is serious and I pray the boy is safe, but this has been a nice break form all Obama coverage/threads.

I’m kinda glad you said that because while it’s a bit extreme, I didn’t think it was ‘out there’. It would be out there for most families but not all. The family spends a huge amount of time together, is teaching their kids (YAY HOMESCHOOLING!) more about math and science than they ever will in school, they probably share their parent’s passion and getting up at night to go out into a storm is probably so exciting to little boys that they can’t wait. Much better than parents that never bother with their kids at all.

Beides. My sons would have gone to sleep in their clothes at that age if I’d let them. I don’t know that most little boys would bother to put pajamas on if they weren’t nagged into it.

Terrific - as in major fine and jail time for making false police report?

"Kids do amazingly stupid and dangerous things.”

When I was four, I burned down our garage and part of our second floor when I apparently tried to weld something. Then, to escape the wrath of my parents, I hid in the cabs of one of the fire trucks that showed up, causing my parents even additional grief. My father reminded me about continually up to and literally including the day that he died, some 50 years later.

Fox31 reporter says the basket WAS attached when the balloon took off.

Policeman is now saying he thinks he might have seen something fall from the balloon, when they first started following it.

50’ altitude would definitely hurt, but unless a head first drop it probably wouldn’t be fatal immediately.

Are you kidding? You could compress the spinal cord into the brain stem, tear the aorta, fracture the upper cervical vertebrae...death would be swift.

50% of all falls from 20 feet are fatal.

Did you note the lack of exigency on the part of the police in getting into the chamber of the balloon? The cops were just standing around. There was a guy with a shovel cutting holes in the periphery. But no one was trying to rapidly enter the container where the boy would have been. Seemed like they knew there was noone in their prior to touchdown.

what you hit on the ground.

Good point, I was thinking about flat grass. If you fell on concrete or worse yet a sharp rock or fence post then yes all bets are off.

Also the change in altitude would make sense. It goes neutral buoyant at 50'. Kid jumps out trying to land on a roof (cuts the distance you have to fall). With the kids weight gone the balloon shoots up to 8k (3k off ground). The kid (hopefully) is knocked out on a roof top so nobody knows where he is.

I still hope he is hiding in the basement but that is looking less and less likely by the second.

Re: jerk Shepard Smith

I didn’t notice any joking but he did sound like he was trying to do a bad folksy Dan Rather-type impersonation.

Besides his usually smirky, wise-cracking way of reporting the news, he several times referred to the thing as a pan of Jiffy Popcorn. He apparently wants people to focus more on him and his goofy personality rather than the serious news he's reporting.

C’mon! You know HolyO {cue angelic chorus} will give a speech about this, claiming he ‘inherited this helium balloon from the previous administration’ and blaming it all on President Bush!!

Where is the boy?

Family is messed up.

That's putting it kindly.

That video goes a LONG way towards answering some pretty obvious questions.

It was a big deal. It was a goverment weapon. (You check out weapons kind of like a library in Israel; there is actually strict gun control but basically everyone gets a gun.)

Big investigation, I was taken out of the home for a week, etc.

I still remember every detail to this day.

My sisters were on the other wall; I just as easily could have killed them as not.
