Jim DeMint -What I Heard in Honduras
WSJ ^ | October 10, 2009 | Jim DeMint

Posted on 10/09/2009 6:57:13 PM PDT by opentalk

After visiting Tegucigalpa last week and meeting with a cross section of leaders from Honduras's government, business community, and civil society, I can report there is no chaos there. There is, however, chaos to spare in the Obama administration's policy toward our poor and loyal allies in Honduras. In a day packed with meetings, we met only one person in Honduras who opposed Mr. Zelaya's ouster, who wishes his return, and who mystifyingly rejects the legitimacy of the November elections: U.S. Ambassador Hugo Llorens.

There is something that really smells rotten in Washington DC.

We need to fumigate quickly.

Glad to see DeMint on the case. This administration's betrayal of Honduras is a humiliating embarrassment.

V. Was the removal of Honduran President Zelaya legal, in accordance with Honduran constitutional and statutory law?

Available sources indicate that the judicial and legislative branches applied constitutional and statutory law in the case against President Zelaya in a manner that was judged by the Honduran authorities from both branches of the government to be in accordance with the Honduran legal system.

However, removal of President Zelaya from the country by the military is in direct violation of the Article 102 of the Constitution, and apparently this action is currently under investigation by the Honduran authorities.50 44

How else would they remove him, if he would not go willingly?

When I asked Ambassador Llorens why the U.S. government insists on labeling what appears to the entire country to be the constitutional removal of Mr. Zelaya a "coup," he urged me to read the legal opinion drafted by the State Department's top lawyer, Harold Koh. As it happens, I have asked to see Mr. Koh's report before and since my trip, but all requests to publicly disclose it have been denied.

On the other hand, the only thorough examination of the facts to date—conducted by a senior analyst at the Law Library of Congress—confirms the legality and constitutionality of Mr. Zelaya's ouster. (It's on the Internet here .)

Unlike the Obama administration's snap decision after June 28, the Law Library report is grounded in the facts of the case and the intricacies of Honduran constitutional law. So persuasive is the report that after its release, the New Republic's James Kirchick concluded in an Oct. 3 article that President Obama's hastily decided Honduras policy is now "a mistake in search of a rationale."

The most transparent administration in history fails again.

I think the only mistake was sending him out of the country. Maybe should have just arrested him.

Come on, how many of you people actually read let alone studied the CRS report minutely? None? It figures.

...I think it will happen.

I'm coming to the same conclusion.

The federal oligarchy has usurped so much power from The People, and repressed so many of our agreed-upon means for redress of grievances, that there's little recourse left for the citizens to save themselves from tyranny.

Yes he would!

“Hondurans are therefore left scratching their heads. They know why Hugo Chávez, Daniel Ortega and the Castro brothers oppose free elections and the removal of would-be dictators, but they can’t understand why the Obama administration does.”

Oh, dear Hondurans! Unfortunately America’s communists have taken power now in the White House and in the majority in Congress.

THAT’s why the Obammunists side with the likes of Chavez, Ortega, the Castro’s and your own totalitarian Marxist wannabe ‘leader’.

But most Americans LOVE freedom! So, again, we say, stay strong! Do not give in to the Obammunists and the Clintonistas!!!!

Sunlight is the best disinfectant-

A huge disc covered the bright midday sun in Tegucigalpa and aroused the curiosity of thousands of people. Experts credit the strange event to the formation of tiny ice particles in the atmosphere of the city.

Demint keeps on hitting home runs.

I will never forget his support for the real conservative Toomey against the Unicorn defender Specter when Bush and the GOP establishment did.

Why, sir, would you meet with dozens of Zelaya's detractors but only one who sided with him?

You'd expect some of the people cited - Zelaya's political allies/friends - to have been so. Can you blame the man if they turned out not to be so?

Why, sir, would you meet with dozens of Zelaya's detractors but only one who sided with him? Do you consider that balanced? I sure don't.

Where did DeMint say that he refused to meet any Zelaya supporters? His point seems to be that Zelaya supporters are hard to find among actual live Hondurans, and I don't see you refuting this.

I'm willing to argue my position point-by-point with anyone on this board, but so far no one here has been willing to discuss the issues. They'd rather get into name-calling, "facts" that aren't true, or overblown rhetoric.

Coming into an argument with a chip on your shoulder and starting out by insulting everyone on the thread is not a productive way to "argue a position."

Demint’s comments are direct and to the point. I welcome this bit of sunshine on this matter. It’s one of the few moments of clarity from a U.S. official since the Honduran president was booted.

Obama is such an ass-hat clown.

He just got the peace prize, yet if the Honduran government hadn’t been firmly grounded, he could have very well have precipitated trouble there.

Obama got the Nobel for his sterling international relations. So much for the grasp of the Nobel Peace Prize committee.

They just crowned an international dunce, a person who could easily have caused civil unrest and deaths in one of our nearby friendly states.

It was all over a simple concept, Obama and company should have been able to conceptualize in moments. Yet months later, he and they still haven’t gotten it.

Obama is our national disgrace. He is our hemisphere’s ass-hat clown. The world marvels at the absence of reasoned thinking by U.S. leadership. So do I.
