Palin's popularity torments key Republicans

WASHINGTON - She's poised to become the best-selling author in the United States, has a devoted base of conservative supporters and is considered a front-runner to lead the Republicans into the next election in 2012 - and yet key party strategists are tormented by the popularity of Sarah Palin.

The very notion of a Palin candidacy has been derided in recent days by some of the brightest minds in the Republican party even as the former governor of Alaska outlines her policies on Afghanistan, energy and other issues of national importance.

"Were she to be the nominee, we could have a catastrophic election," Steve Schmidt, John McCain's presidential campaign manager last year, said recently.

He was backed by Mike Murphy, a Republican media consultant who also made a point of chastising Schmidt for his role in Palin's rise to international prominence to begin with.

"Steve Schmidt correct about Sarah Palin and '12," Murphy said by way of his Twitter feed. "Shame he didn't feel same way a year ago when he was lobbying McCain to choose her as VP."

John Weaver, McCain's closest political adviser for years, also weighed in earlier this week about a Palin candidacy.

"It would surely mean a political apocalypse is upon us," he said.

Yet from her unlikely pulpit - Facebook, and not the governor's office in Wasilla, Alaska - Palin is getting her message out on everything from health-care reform and energy while assailing President Barack Obama for his position on Afghanistan. Many of her 900,000-plus "friends" on the social networking site are cheering her every word.

And if they are the “brightest minds in the Republican Party,” we are doomed. Because of them, democrats control two branches of government and MIGHT control a third if another SC Judge goes byebye.

Wasn't Schmidt hired to bring a coherent message to McCain's campaign? Yeah, that really worked out well.

From what I recall, the only win this guy has to his credit is with Arnold's gubernatorial campaign. Most, if not all of the politicians Schmidt "advised" prior to that LOST. I'm not sure how he ended up working for Bush and Cheney, but clearly this guy is more hat than cattle.

When that happens (and, it will) it won't slow Sarah down a bit.

She's a runner --

Sarah will just hop out of the car -- and keep on running!

“Well, the question is, WILL she do the hard work and organizing necessary for a successful campaign? And WILL she appeal to independents?”

During the election I mostly haunted the PUMA sites rather than the conservative ones, because the PUMAs were more upbeat and intent on defeating BHO. Most of my conservative friends sounded suicidal, and were making me feel the same way. The PUMAs on the other hand were scrappy as hell and determined to win or to go down fighting.

Palin was attractive to a number of the PUMAs and independents on those boards, some for the simplistic and single minded issue that she is a she, but many because they were attracted to her record as a reformer, pro business, outside the beltway and for her family narrative and personal independence. She would probably have distinct appeal to disgruntled Dems and Ex-Dems who were once part of the Reagan coalition until the two Bush administrations frittered it all away.

Her toughest issue will be her position on abortion, but oh well. Some things have to be fought out because they are the right fight, whether or not it is the right time or place.

These RINOS lost an election to a socialist/marxist. I find that unforgivable. Any number of gutsy conservatives could have labled Obama as such. Sarah exposed part of Obamas disguise at the convention and would have finished him off during the rest of the campaign if allowed.

These people who attack Sarah Palin are really shooting themselves in both feet, and if they had enough smarts to do their homework, they would behave quite the opposite toward her. They wrongly perceive that she will continue to stay out of the public arena, perhaps until 2012 while they continue to throw barbs without risk to themselves. Stupid kids.

Sarah will be doing a book tour probably through the next year. That's standard for any book author, but based on the initial orders, she will be drawing large crowds everywhere (and what the elitist jerks refuse to acknowledge is that Sarah's supporters include large numbers of working Democrats and independents, as well as those hated conservatives).

Here's another safety point for those determined to blast off their other foot (you stupid, stupid people):

Sarah's year of book touring out among the people happens to coincide with the year of campaigning for the primary and general elections of 2010.

If you are a campaign manager or staffer who has spoken or written ill of Gov. Palin, you might want to consider what effect that will have on your candidate/employer.

If you are a candidate for one of those elections, you might want to consider what you have said or written against Gov. Palin, in addition to what your campaign managers have said or written against Gov. Palin.

Here is why: We uncultured slugs out in the hinterlands, along with many fellow uncultured slugs within the urban electorate, who recognize Gov. Palin as the Leader of the Free World, we also recognize that your attacks against Gov. Palin are not personally targeted against her -- it is us you hate; it is the hard-working productive American taxpayers that you detest; it is us who no longer will contribute to your RNC/RSCC/RCCC because of your treachery. You are attacking US. Well, F U too.

We probably won't get all of you, but some of you jerks are going down, some in the primaries, and some in the general.

Thank you for NOT LETTING US FORGET.

>>or persuaded the father of her grandchild to make the mother an honest lady.>>

In your wisdom, please tell us how Sarah Palin would be able to.... as your comment implies “PERSUADE” that no-good A$$hole Levi Johnston to man up and be a father? How many women (and men for that matter) in the same situation are able to carry out that change?......your personal experience, perhaps?

Seems to me that she’s mustered a more effective Internet organization on her own than all those insider ‘experts’ could gather for the McCain campaign in ‘08.

I’ll wait for her book tour, but it seems she might also be more effective in getting her message out than that whole band of experts was in ‘08.

And she got more done in Alaska than any other Republican on the scene has accomplished as an executive-branch pol.

I’m amazed by those who argue that Palin doesn’t have enough experience, because she doesn’t have the experience Reagan had.

But the biggest limitation to Reagan’s success is probably that he had too much experience—that is, he was too old—to effectively advance his agenda through the end of his second term. Certainly, Reagan’s experience over 70 years is a silly standard by which to measure whether Palin has enough experience.

Come late 2012, I'm considering buying stock in pharmaceutical companies that manufacture anti-depressants.

Sales of those when Palin is sworn in as POTUS are going to skyrocket.

Let me see: Barack Obama had a political career of about five minutes before getting elected prez by seven million votes, but Sarah Palin has to be involved for twenty years before she should be allowed to run. The idiot in the article who made that statement should never be hired by anybody for anything.

A fact that is often overlooked. When Reagan ran against Carter he was 69 and in good health with a lot of energy. Having said that you cannot compare the well-being and robust capacity of a senior citizen with a 48 year old woman (in 2012) who runs every day and is in good shape.

Anybody who supports Sarah Palin knows she is indefatigable, relentless and will never give up.

Yes, I suppose if she were debating Romney in a primary, she could turn the tables on the Reagan quip and tell him she won’t hold his age against him. (Mitt would be almost 66 by the time he took office in 2013.)

If I remember right it was good old Steve who put out a press release announcing that McCain was giving up on Michigan on the same day that Palin cleaned Biden’s clock in her debate. What kind of an idiot puts out a press release about giving up on a state? I know, the Dip Schmidt type of idiot. Isn’t Murphy one of Mitten’s boys?

I never even knew the worthless drone who impregnated my daughter. But Sarah does. She wants to be president, she ought to be able to get that job done. Generally, it used to take a shotgun, a few strong family members, and a minister. But these are kinder and more gentler times, so I leave it up to her and her husband to figure out how.

OK. Good. She can appeal to independents, but that leaves the question of whether she’ll do the work. We’ve got three years to observe and judge, but it’s too early to fixate on her yet as the great hot, moose-hunting hope.

Good news is, they are not even close to being the brightest minds in the Republican Party. Thousands of posters on FR and millions of Republicans all over the country, have a much better handle of what needs to be done to beat the Democrats in 2010 and 2012, than these losers.

Alright Clive, I read the whole thing and found it to be simply repeative of the GOP pup tent view that has been seen by me since Reagan first announced his canidacy.

Expanding beyond her base has to do with her being heard beyond a limited number of people outside the fringe media’s control.

I know this is going to make Palin worshipers angry but Palin put herself in the hands of Rino handlers who HATE American-Americans and who were determined to destory her. Reagan was much too wise to ever make that mistake. Still, Palin has a chance at redemption with the general public and to talk over these pests like Reagan did. I don’t know that she is wise enough or smart enough to do that yet. We will see with the book.

Rinos have a lot riding on destorying Palin as they know they, as wine swilling citizens of the glob, are out of power when an American-American gains power. I pray Palin can pull it off as Reagan did despite her HUGE error of entering into National politics surrounded by back stabbing, hating, Rinos.
