Conde Nast CEO Charles Townsend said Monday he was shutting down four magazines, including the awarding winning Gourmet, parenthood title Cookie and two of the companys bridal magazines, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride.
It was the biggest one-day bloodbath in the publishing companys 100-year history. Hundreds of people will be tossed out of work.
The company said it would keep the Gourmet cookbooks and television programming but shut the monthly magazine. Brides, the last surviving bridal book, will move to monthly from six times a year.
Industry sources had estimated that Conde Nast could lose $200 million this year.

Gourmet bites the dust. What the heck do I do if I need to flip through endless pages of paper for a good chutney recipe??

There's still Chutney Illustrated and Condiments Monthly?

Were these widely circulated magazines? I don’t believe I had ever heard of any of them....

Gourmet used to be a fine magazine. But eventually it just became an arrogant listing of snooty restaurants and complex recipes that normal people wouldn't bother with.
Like the New Yorker, it's a magazine to put on your coffee table so that visitors know that they aren't as cool as you.

I just hit foodnetwork.com for a sea bass recipe to use with some corvina I bought. This highlights why this sort of thing is happening.

I remember a comedian making jokes about Bride’s magazines...its the woman that snags the men. How many magazines are dedicated to men’s marriage? ...crickets chirping....

I am heartbroken over the death of Gourmet.
To: Artemis Webb
Reminiscent of Lennon's assertion that Elvis died when he went in the army, Gourmet died when that PC-obsessed former NY Slimes food critic Ruth Reichl became editor. Crap sandwiches would have tasted better than the food she championed...
