The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war.
According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week.
The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago's unsuccessful Olympic bi

The General looks disgusted that he has to answer to someone like that.
He sounds like presidential material to me. A no-nonsense Alpha male.
“Smile, your pension is at stake”
I've adopted that pose from time to time, trying to listen quietly to a guy who's really pissing me off....
Notable that Truman actively asked Eisenhower to run in 52, saying he would support him even though they were in opposite parties. Don’t recall whether he said it outright or not but motive was in part keeping macarthur from running/winning.

I'm late to the thread, but I am in total agreement. I think Jim is trying to adapt to being a civilian.
Mr. Jones, remember this: you never stop being a Marine. Act accordingly...we have troops dying in Afghanistan.
I prefer to remember General McAuliffe:
NUTS!
Do you really believe that there is any equivalence between Soviet era underpaid, unmotivated conscripts, overseen by zampolits, and our current volunteer force?

Obama is playing the rope a dope national socialist game, familiar in the history of fascism, if any would care to read it.
Thanks for your service. I too spent 8 years on AD as an Army officer (air defense artillery).
As I sit here typing, I'm reliving instances where I took on my bosses for the welfare of my soldiers. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I never considered myself a "water walker", but I learned how to get the job done, to include yanking victory from defeat in tac evals, or getting a cargo plane diverted in flight to save hundreds of man hours.
It pales to the leadership shown by our officers and NCOs in combat, as I served during 1976-1984, a time of peace. Still, I'm proud to have played a role in launching the all-volunteer force.
I trust GEN McChrystal to do the right thing.
The General is most cetainly not the niave one here! He has been a General for much longer than Barry has been CIC and he should stop talking to the General and start listening before he kills all of our troops in the field.
As 0bama gives ROE (Rules of engagement) to our military that get them killed.
Has any senate or congressperson called for his impeachment yet?
Stanley McChrystal in ‘12!!!!!
GEN McChrystal is not airing any disagreements with Obama's strategy, because the strategy has not been decided! He is publicly advocating for the resources he needs to properly conduct a counterinsurgency strategy that Obama outlined seven months ago.
As an expert on military insubordination, GEN McChrystal has not crossed the line.
In my case, a Jesuit education did not mix well with many officers I came into contact with. LOL! Interesting though, that a number of my best efficiency reports came from superiors with whom I "started on the wrong foot."
For example, my last battalion cdr in Germany denied my extension because I wasn't "his type of officer". As he actually saw my performance over a period of a few months, his attitude changed, and I departed from Germany 18 months later. We both ended up at Fort Bliss, and he tabbed me to be his operations officer (an O-5 slot), even though I had just been promoted to Captain.
That's for sure. I am sure he is listening to “..I...me...I...me...it does not look good...I...me, me, me...” and the General is thinking to himself “What the h*ll has this country come to if this putz is in charge”.
While the General worries about the men and women under his command, TOTUS worries about his image.
I say break out the pugil sticks and have the winner make the decision.
