Just got my National Geographic Wold Map in the mail yesterday and it shows a whole gaggle of populated islands all around Samoa. If there is a big tsunami, and I understand one can move at some 600 miles per hour, most of those islands are already toast.
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was caused by an undersea earthquake with a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, but a 7.9 one I understand is capable of producing a killer wave also.
Prayers for those in its wake—

Yep—that’s a nasty one. When I was stationed in Guam in 1993, we had one measured at 7.8. That was bad enough, thanks.

Just read on one of the many posted links that New Zealand is now under a tsunami warning (as well as several other islands) and I’m wondering if it’s like the watches/warnings we get in Florida for hurricanes etc. A watch means- be on the lookout- you’re in the cone of possibility- a warning means- it’s coming for you. Do you know if it’s the same for tsunamis?
