BANGKOK For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.
The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.
Even though the benefit is modest, "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," Col. Jerome Kim said in a telephone interview. He helped lead the study for the U.S. Army, which sponsored it with the National

Don’t be so sure. with Nationalized Health care, and the obvious degradation of the standards. Plus the need to “save” money, the dangers expand exponentially.
Therefore, no one is safe.
The study wouldn’t have infected anyone with that number involved.
Basically, they gave 11,000 people the trial drug and compared them with 11,000 that didn’t have the drug but were also initially AIDS-free at the start of the study.
31% fewer AIDS cases developed among the 11,000 with the vaccine than what developed among the non-treated people in the study.
You think it’s ignorant to not sleep around?
You are the definition of self-proclaimed ignorance.
My understanding of the AIDS situation in Africa is that HIV is not tested and that any number of conditions that make someone look malnourished can be labeled “AIDS.”
They appear to have no standard there for AIDS as the developed world does.
That isn’t quite correct. First of all, you are right in that insertive penile intercourse (be it vaginal or anal) is about 10 times less risky than receptive intercourse and that additional STDs facilitate transmission. However, that pales in comparison to another factor: most infections are due to high viral loads, be it either from full blown AIDS or in the course of the primary infection (first few weeks). The reason why there are so many cases in Africa is because many patients go undiagnosed for long times and because of a “web” of concurrent sexual affairs (e.g. husband has 6 women on the side, wife has 4 affairs) in some African cultures. It’s the concurrence, i.e. simultaneous occurrence, that is the problem: This way one primary infection is spread among the group which is linked to the next group and so forth.
>> While this is excellent news as it may prevent children from getting the disease or even given to those who have bleeding disorders and need many transfusions. I can see it giving a false sense of security and a green flag to continue with a destructive lifestyle. <<
People who are into destructive lifestyles don’t need a green flag to justify their risky lifestyle. They would do it even if there was a 100% chance of catching something that was lethal each time they enguaged in something.
Out of the AIDS cases in the US as of last year, over 72% of all adult cases had sex completely or partly implicated in the transmission. This vaccine, which many on this thread thinks is a great thing, only had 31% success.
I think most intelligent people would say something that shows a 120% better result in stopping AIDS is a much better option.
By the way, of those under age 13 with AIDS, 93% got it from their mother, of which if she had a 72% likelihood of getting it from, you guessed it, sex yet again.
The total number of AIDS cases under 13 is fortunately less than 1% of the total number of all AIDS cases in the US.

Which translates into those so inclinced becoming infected the evening of the first day of the Folsom Street Festival rather than in the early afternoon.
“You never know what God has planned for you.”
I sometimes wish I could go over it with him and find a way to either negotiate my way out of the worst and alleviate what I can.
Some people don’t always choose that, like assault victims perhaps. Do you suggest they suffer?
Nice.
Excluding you.
I will agree that if this is true it is good news. The problem is that from the information I have seen (and I’ll look for it right after I post this) for an AIDS vaccine to be really useful it MUST be 100% - preventing each and every host cell in the body from ever being invaded. That has never been true with any vaccine. This is why I must be colored very skeptical about the usefulness of this solution.
I don't know how accurate this article is since I'm not a physician, but it sounds very plausible. If so, even a very good vaccine for this type of virus is only going to be marginally useful in the long run.
It said it was only 33% effective, besides, I don’t believe much that I read from the medical community, I’d love to see them end this misery though ...
Yep.
This is about a great deal more than AIDS or HIV. If, in fact, a combination of external glycoproteins and internal DNA can trigger enough of an immune response to protect the immune system itself from HIV, we have implications for application in a wide spectrum of viral diseases. It may, paradoxically-seeming, actually help prevent the sort of cytokine storm that makes such diseases as influenza deadly to healthy people. Fascinating technique.

Yes it is; I'm glad you raised this issue.
Africans have a high rate of STDs, which create open open areas in the mucosa, allowing HIV access to the blood stream.
Consequently women are as likely to get HIV infection from men as to pass it to them; heterosexual infection is for more likely there than in places where STDs are treated.
