BANGKOK — For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.

The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.

Even though the benefit is modest, "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," Col. Jerome Kim said in a telephone interview. He helped lead the study for the U.S. Army, which sponsored it with the National

Ah yes. Another HIV vaccine. That is called a grant application. Don’t pay attention to the fact that no one has every shown that the retrovirus causes AIDS. If you watch, as I have for almost thirty years, you’ll see one or two of these announcements each month.

I dunno. Maybe it needs to be reported to fishy@whitehouse.gov.

Seems to me the odds of that are worse than a meteor hitting my house. Besides this vaccine only reduces the chance by 1/3rd!

I don’t think this is anything promising. It’s just going to give false hope and create more people believing they are ‘invincible’ and think they can have sex with anything that moves.

You give dogs a bad name .... but your point is well taken.

Why should I care when people KNOWINGLY and PURPOSELY make stupid and wrong choices. Stupid is as stupid does ......

Aids was conceived as a money maker ... bilions upon billion were spent to stop its spread. Too bad nobody wanted to listen to logic .. for years the Politically Correct crowd said it was everybody’s disease ... 17 years and billion and billions of doallarse later, turns out .. yes .... it is a disease among gays and druggies.

but but but ......

Funny what keeping your dohickey in your pocket in the realm of monogamous lifestyle will do. But saying that makes me judgemental .. I guess I never got enlightend ...

Funny thing alongside ... this is a twofer, more bang for your buck ... kids don’t get thrown in jail or shot or stabbed, when they are at home and in bed by 10 on a school night.

Choices? Personal responsibility? Common sense?? oh no .. what a strange set of concepts....

Half received the treatment and the other half received a placebo. The experimental group evidently had a 31 percent lower incidence of HIV infection than the control group.

The experimental vaccine is a synergistic combo of two other vaccines. One uses HIV genes, and the other uses the HIV protein coat. Neither one is effective alone, but together they have a significant effect. I wonder if a hypothetical AIDS vaccine will simply be an admixture of many component vaccines, each targeting a different part of the HIV machine, instead of one novel molecule that does it all? I wonder if it will need periodic updating or booster shots?

I have found the 100% perfect AIDS vaccine! Don't sleep around like a dog!

Or receive tainted blood. Or substandard medical care, like that offered to veterans at VA hospitals. Or come into contact with tainted blood while providing first aid. Or have a monogamous sexual relationship with someone who has HIV. Or get raped. Or be born to a mother with HIV.

Other than that, yeah, 100% perfect.

Don't be so sure. You never know what God has planned for you. Plus people can be vicious.

“a monogamous sexual relationship with someone who has HIV”

What’s “a monogamous sexual relationship”? Do you mean Being Married?

All the examples you give are incredibly rare, as long as Bill Clinton isn’t in charge of a prison blood-taking program.

“You never know what God has planned for you”

lol. Yes, you can know what he DOESN’T have planned for you.

Every good gift, every perfect gift comes from the Father above. If it steals, kills and destroys, it is from the Devil. God doesn’t plan to give people AIDS.

I have never seen the righteous forsaken. Ever.

Liberal arguments are based on single cases, tugging at heartstrings, not telling you the full story.

Just thinking out loud but I would wonder if they make allowance for the change of sexual behavior by people who have volunteered to participate in such a study.

Surely counseling on safer sex practices would have been made available to such a group, even if only by brochures in the doctor’s waiting area.

here is my opinion on why there will never be cure for AIDS. Billions are spent on research for the cure for AIDS. Thousands upon Thousands of research grants. Multiple thousands of research scientists, Doctors, Hospitals, research groups are employed in this search. What happens if you find a cure? All that goes away. There goes the golden goose. It is conceivable that someone has found the cure and sits on it so they can continue to get research grants to continue. If they discovered the cure, other than fame, the group paying for the research will be the one making the money off of the cure

I took a look at your profile page. I wonder if Dr Duesburg will infect himself with HIV to prove that HIV does not cause AIDS?

One doesn't get to see such self proclaimed ignorance on display very often.

Thanks!

I was thinking the exact same thing. In order to test it, wouldn’t they have had to inject people with the vaccine and then inject them with the AIDS virus to see if the vaccine worked? Who would volunteer for this? So now 11,040 more people have AIDS?

No. Just like you don't tell people to smoke if you want to acess the risk of lung cancer. What you do is you look at the general population and / or groups that are at risk anyway. Just like you expect x% of smokers to get lung cancer, you'd expect y% of Bankok sex workers to get infected with HIV in a certain timeframe (e.g. 12 out of a thousand). Then you see if there's a statistically relevant change with a vaccine (e.g. only 8 instead of 12).

HIV has an infamously high mutation rate which allows it to constantly evade new medications introduced to combat it.

Yes and no. Certain areas of the virus genome have to remain relatively stable, otherwise it would render the virus impotent - i.e. most drug-resistant strains are already weaker than the standard virus. The key is to attack these areas. Also the foremost problem with medication isn't drug resistance, it's getting to the virus once it has integrated into hard-to-reach tissue cells. If it were possible to lure it out of hiding (there are some trials with chemotherapy on top of HIV drugs), curing the vast majority of HIV patients, even eventually erdicating the virus would be a distinct possibility.

I have found the 100% perfect AIDS vaccine! Don't sleep around like a dog!

The problem for most southern black women recently infected with HIV (the fastest growing group among those with HIV in the US) wasn't their own infidelity, it was the fact that their husbands were well,.... sleeping around like dogs.

The surest preventative is Trinoasitol..

It's 100% effectove. But it can't be taken orally.

Cheers!

So your a truther then. Millions of deaths later and Africa and Asia being scourged by AIDs to this day and people still buying and selling the propaganda about its origin.

Amazing. Actually amazingly sad.

You need to separate the politics from the reality. The millions of deaths are real. The suffering is real. A housewife can get ill and die from her husband out doing what she doesn’t know he’s doing.

And those stories have happened plenty.

Wake up man.

“I took a look at your profile page. I wonder if Dr Duesburg will infect himself with HIV to prove that HIV does not cause AIDS?”

You would think this myth would have been shown as nonsense from that challenge alone.

But it hasn’t. Because the virus works its deadly pattern every time. It has been forestalled but many have lost the battle.

In fact one of the great things George Bush did as President was help get those medications into the hands of many poor people around the world. Many children will have memories of a mother who would have perished without that assistance.

George Bush never got the credit he deserved for pushing for this. One day he will and others should try to emulate the humanity.
