Genesis: Real, Reliable, Historical

by Andrew A. Snelling, Ph.D.*

Introduction to (new book entitled) Earth's Catastrophic Past

Why Take Genesis Seriously?

The first eleven chapters of the Bible have been relegated by many to the category of myths, not real history. These are said to contain spiritual truth, but they cannot be taken seriously as records of real people and events. Many sincere Christians who believe the Bible do not know what their pastors believe about the historicity of Genesis. Is it safe to assume that these believe in the following truths?

1. God created everything in six 24-hour days.

2 Adam and Eve were real people.

3. God cursed a perfect world as a judgment for sin.

4. Noah constructed an Ark by which two of every kind of air-breathing, land-dwelling animal were saved along with Noah's family from a global flood.

5. The confusion of languages at the Tower of Babel produced the language groups that are found around the world today.

An alarming number of Christian leaders and teachers instead believe that God "created" through evolutionary processes over millions of years, that Adam and Eve descended from a hominid population, and that there has never been a global flood, suggesting that the account of Noah and the Ark is a story adapted from a Babylonian myth.

Mainstream Christian orthodoxy regarded the opening chapters of Genesis as just as real and reliable as the rest of the Bible until 150-200 years ago. So what has happened?...

Argumentum ad Hominem :

The fallacy of attacking the character or circumstances of an individual who is advancing a statement or an argument instead of trying to disprove the truth of the statement or the soundness of the argument. Often the argument is characterized simply as a personal attack.

1. The personal attack is also often termed an "ad personem argument": the statement or argument at issue is dropped from consideration or is ignored, and the locutor's character or circumstances are used to influence opinion.

2. The fallacy draws its appeal from the technique of "getting personal." The assumption is that what the locutor is saying is entirely or partially dictated by his character or special circumstances and so should be disregarded.

Ad Hominem is not a valid debate tactic. Pictures, Images and Photos

If GOD had given us all the 'technical and scientifically provable evidence' about the creation of the Universe, the creation of Earth, the creation of mankind, and all life on Earth, there would be no need for 'faith'. It would have been counter-productive, would it not?

The more you know about something, the less faith you have in it?

Gotta pass. The heels don't make up for you wanting to bring the donkey along, and I am not doing the carpets again, not to mention the mess he left in the chandalier.

It’s better that these people be cast out, and allowed to join the ranks of the dems and the independents then to have them stab the conservative movement in the back, as Little Green Footballs is doing right now.

The founder of LGF, Charles Johnson, was never a conservative. He just tolerated some conservatives there for a while. I'm proud to say I'm banned from LGF.

In Johnson's own words, in an interview for Israel National News:

Q:Were you the lefty type one associates with long haired guitar players?

I was pretty much center-left before 9/11. Never an America-hating loon, though. I've been a history buff most of my life, and on 9/11 I knew instantly who and what was responsible; I was aware of Bin Laden's declaration of war on the US and as soon as I turned on the television that morning and saw the World Trade Center collapse, I knew it was Bin Laden and Al Qaeda.

But that day was a real mind-blower, for many people, myself included. At first, my center-liberal leanings caused me to ask, "Why do they hate us?" and similar questions; that questioning led me to begin serious investigation of the Islamic fanaticism that was growing unchecked in the Middle East.

Now I think the question is a pointless one, not because we shouldn't self-examine, but because the answer lies within the Islamists, not within us -- and understanding them will not achieve anything, except to the extent it allows us to defeat them.

CJ is a Lefty who briefly associated with the Right because he was afraid of Islam. His core beliefs never changed.

The God of Creation, who's [pic] creation is it's [pic] own testament.

We certainly are in agreement on that!

I know. I never really got a handle on perving, and I'm horribly color blind to boot.

Absolutely true. We know more about our government, now, than we ever have in the past. And I have almost no faith in it at all.

Oh that’s a really Christian thing to do: Passing judgment on someone that you know nothing about. You don’t know what I live for. You don’t know what I’ve sacrificed for my Faith. You don’t know what led up to the confrontation, who initiated it, or any of the background other than the tiny fraction that I mentioned.

You sound like a typical self-righteous atheist, except you’re on the other side. YOU know how I’ll be judged by God. YOU know why I do what I do, and my soul and spirit.

You don’t, friend. How I am judged is up to God, not you. But you shouldn’t go around acting like you can speak for him. I doubt he takes too kindly to imposters.

To those who mock the idea of God creating the earth in a literal six day period I say,

“Maybe YOUR god is too weak and powerless to do such a thing, but I know that MY GOD, the eternal all-powerful God of the universe, could have done with just the sound of His voice. I believe.”

I say:
So if God is so powerful, then why did He take six days to create the world and not just do it instantly?

If God is so powerful, then why can’t He save everybody and not send most of Earth’s population to Hell?

Personally, the “my God is more powerful than your god” is silly.

I find problems with the Darwinian model. Are you assuming that I don’t?

Your word choice tells me you’re a (insert non-personal, non-judgmental attack here)... you guys are so good at popping into these threads and calling names then using scripture against believers. I don’t happen to worship at the temple of Darwin. Call it what you wish and point to whatever you’d like, but your beliefs are entirely inconsistent with the Word of God. I don’t give a flip what any man says. If it contradicts the Word then the Pope is wrong.

And, as an aside... why can’t you all figure out not all Christians are Catholic? It boggles the mind how small your collective world is.

“I have missed your wit.”

And I appreciate it. It’s really the only way I can vent my annoyance with the evo’s without getting too very personal. Brains in a thimble...

Hope you have a good evening.
