The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warns in an urgent, confidential assessment of the war that he needs more forces within the next year and bluntly states that without them, the eight-year conflict "will likely result in failure," according to a copy of the 66-page document obtained by The Washington Post.
Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal says emphatically: "Failure to gain the initiative and reverse insurgent momentum in the near-term (next 12 months) -- while Afghan security capacity matures -- risks an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible."
His assessment was sent to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Aug. 30 and is now being reviewed by President Obama and his national security team.
McChrystal concludes the document's five-page Commander's Summary on a note of muted optimism: "While the situation is serious, success is still achievable."

He is one of the perfumed princes of the pentagon. McChrystal has never been in combat.

That’s funny you posted that picture. I was cleaning the garage and found a magazine talking about the 88 election.
He is one of the perfumed princes of the pentagon.”
UGGGHHH! Nothing worse than a paper-pusher making decisions on Boots On The Ground combat policy. NOTHING!
McChrystal was in command when they released the phony story about Pat Tilman. It cost him his promotion. He got his promotion to General for towing the obama line in Afghanistan. Quid pro quo.
obama has no intention of WINNING in Afghanistan. Bin effing Laden is DEAD. There should be bombing runs every hour on the hour after the Taliban and their poppies and their caves.
We can WIN this “war,” but not if we aren’t allowed to fight it.
I am glad that you have a friend in Spec Ops. That makes you a bit of a hero yourself, doesn’t it?!
Great links-if you like high blood pressure and heartburn !
McChrystal should be relieved of his command for purposefully putting the lives of civilians , many of them pro Taliban ,
above those of American soldiers .
But, since he’s doing Barry’s bidding -he’ll probably get a promotion.
This is unbelievable and most repulsive and all stems from Barry’s hatred of America and our military.
The silence of the Republicans is even more disgusting.
I know McConnell and McCain started to tiptoe around the issue yesterday , but, they are too timid
and too late to save the four Marines.
How many others have died in Afghanistan because of Barry’s ROEs ?
And how many more soldiers are going to be needlessly sacrificed before someone challenges Obama’s anti military,
pro Taliban policy in Afghanistan ?
High blood pressure is right! I can’t imagine what the military families are thinking about all this right now. Regardless of 0 and McChluess are doing>>> America supports our troops!
Here is the list of those KIA last week (3 Marines and a Navy Corpsman):(...
U.S. names dead from Tuesdays Afghan ambush

KABUL, Afghanistan Navy medical corpsman James Layton, of Riverbank, Calif., had been ministering first aid to wounded Marine Lt. Michael Johnson, of Virginia Beach, Va., when both were killed Tuesday under a volley of insurgent bullets in Afghanistans eastern Kunar province.
If we leave this house, the people in the house in front of us will shoot us, were the last words that Marine Staff Sgt. Aaron Kenefick, of Roswell, Ga., was heard calling into his radio before it went silent. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Edwin W. Johnson, Jr., of Columbus, Ga., died alongside them.
Layton was 22; Michael Johnson, 25; Edwin Johnson, 31; and Kenefick, 30...

“so if it was confidential..who leaked it and why?
And isnt this some kind of crime to leak this kind of info?”
Yep, that’s exactly what the wapo were going for with that little snippet.
I belong to an organization called Soldier’s Angels, www.soldiersangels.com, founded by the granddaughter of Gen. George Patton. This is how it works...the soldier submits his name for adoption, and you sign up to adopt a soldier for x amount of months. You agree to send a care package once a month, and a letter or card to the soldier once a week. I also belong to the Soldier’s Angels Letter Writing Team...I signed up to send a letter of support to two soldiers per week. Soldier’ Angels then sends me the names/addresses of two soldiers every week who submitted their names to receive letters. I can bow out of the Letter Writing Team at any time.
Soldier’s Angels is in need of volunteers to adopt a soldier....these young men and women are so appreciative of my letters to them...some of these soldiers have sent me a thank you note, and on occasions they have sent me some tokens of their stay in Afghanistan...it is touching and so appreciated by me. I have especially noticed that the soldiers from Afghanistan are in dire need of personal items; soldiers told me they’re in a remote location with no showers, chowhall or sleep trailers and in some cases no PX available...these soldiers are in need and need your help. Please check out Soldier’s Angels’ web site, and help out a soldier. These soldiers need our written support and a helping hand..there are more soldiers names being submitted than there are volunteers in some cases. God bless our soldiers, “our home team”, our “Band of Brothers and Sisters.”
Bump to save place & sign up tonight.
No, this is cover for Obama with his “people” or should I say sheeple. He’s going to send the troops and always was. Afghanistan, unlike Iraq, so the Dem line goes, is the right war.
Someone posted “We need a Commander in Chief, NOT an insurance salesman!” on FR last week. I’m now going to makestickers and turn that into a bumpersticker.
No, not at all. It just gives some little bit of insight from the guys on the ground, and the more the better.
He’s going on Bobby Flay’s cooking show next, along with other shows, and I am not kidding.
