Report: Accomplices in NYC Terror Plot Known
Fox News ^ | September 28, 2009
Posted on September 28, 2009 4:35:10 PM PDT by rdl6989
NEW YORK After interrupting what they believed was a terrorist plot on New York City with a series of raids and arrests, authorities have intensified their focus on possible accomplices of the suspected Al Qaeda associate at the heart of the case, a law enforcement official said Monday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation continues, confirmed that investigators know the identities of at least three people believed to be in on a bombing plot they say might have targeted mass transit in the New York area.
Authorities released a flurry of terrorism warnings for sports complexes, hotels and transit systems even while saying the plot was disrupted before it become an immediate threat. But many questions remain unanswered, including the whereabouts of co-conspirators and whether any may be cooperating with the probe.
There also have been no reports that any of the bomb-making materials have been recovered.

SNIPPET: “On October 1, 2009, Time Magazine wrote that Najibullah Zazi, the Afghan immigrant facing charges of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction in the U.S., “became enchanted with the controversial Indian Muslim televangelist Dr. Zakir Naik” and that Dr. Naik “preaches a wild mix of harsh Islamic rhetoric and unorthodox Muslim theology.”
The article also reported that, “His [Dr. Naik’s] videos reach a global audience online. On the topic of jihad and terrorism, Naik was far from the most incendiary voice, but he managed in his own way to make clear the choice between bin Laden and Uncle Sam. ‘If [bin Laden] is fighting enemies of Islam, I am for him,’ the former medical doctor says in one YouTube clip. ‘If he is terrorizing America - the terrorist, biggest terrorist - I am with him. Every Muslim should be a terrorist.’” [1]

Mohammed Zazi Indicted for False Statement Involving International and Domestic Terrorism
DENVERMohammed Zazi, age 53, who is presently residing in Aurora, Colorado, was indicted today by a federal grand jury in Denver for making a false statement in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism, United States Attorney David Gaouette and Denver FBI Special Agent in Charge James Davis announced. Zazi is presently free on a $50,000 unsecured bond, with the condition that he be under electronic monitoring by the court. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Denver (at 901 19th Street) tomorrow, Friday, October 9, 2009, at 1:30 pm, in Courtroom A201 before Magistrate Judge Craig B. Shaffer.
Mohammed Wali Zazi was first arrested by the FBI based on a Criminal Complaint filed on Saturday, September 19, 2009. He was indicted today, October 8, 2009.
According to the indictment, on or about September 16, 2009, Mohammed Zazi did knowingly and willfully make a materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statement to agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Specifically, Mohammed Zazi allegedly denied that he spoke with anyone by telephone regarding whether Najibullah Zazi was in any trouble, when, in fact, on or about September 11, 2009, he did speak by telephone with a person regarding whether Najibullah Zazi was in any trouble.
If convicted of the charge, Mohammed Zazi faces not more than 8 years in federal prison, and up to a $250,000 fine, or both.
The Zazi case is being investigated by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Joint Terrorism Task Forces in Denver and New York. Substantial assistance has also been provided by the Counterterrorism Section of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Mohammed Zazi is being prosecuted by United States Attorney David Gaouette, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tim Neff and Greg Holloway, and Counterterrorism Trial Attorney William Narus. Najibullah Zazi is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of New York.
These charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

SNIPPET: “Those currently under surveillance in the United States include members of Zazi’s travel group, according to one source familiar with the investigation. Another source said at least some of the travel group are back in the United States. Officials will not discuss the identity, number or location of those under surveillance.
One of those under round-the-clock surveillance is Queens, New York, resident Naiz Khan. He and Zazi were friends as teenagers and Zazi stayed at Khan’s rented apartment on September 10 after driving to New York from Denver.”

SNIPPET: “Adis Medunjanin, a 24-year-old Bosnian immigrant, met voluntarily with investigators for 14 hours, said Robert Gottlieb, a New York lawyer representing him. Zarein Ahmedzay, a 24-year-old New York City cab driver, also was interviewed by the FBI, said his brother, Nazir Ahmedzay.
Both men’s photos were among four shown to Ahmad Wais Afzali, an imam at a Queens mosque accused of tipping off Najibullah Zazi (nah-jee-BOO’-lah ZAH’-zee) that New York Police Department detectives were searching for him. Ron Kuby, a New York lawyer representing the imam, confirmed that detectives showed Afzali photos of Medunjanin and Ahmedzay along with Zazi’s.
Naiz Kahn, a high school friend of Zazi’s who allowed him to stay in his Queens apartment last month when prosecutors say Zazi was preparing his attack, said he also has been questioned by the FBI.”

MOHAMMED ZAZI APPEARS IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT IN DENVER FOR INITIAL APPEARANCE
DENVER Mohammed Zazi, age 53, of Aurora, Colorado, appeared this afternoon in U.S. District Court in Denver for an initial appearance and arraignment on his recently obtained indictment. The indictment, returned yesterday by a federal grand jury in Denver, charges Mohammed Zazi with making a false statement in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism. Zazi appeared this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Craig B. Shaffer, who read the indictment at Zazis lawyers request. Magistrate Judge Shaffer then advised Zazi of his rights and the penalties associated with the indictment. Zazi then entered a pro-forma not guilty plea to the charge through his attorney. A Pashtun interpreter was present during the hearing. The case will now proceed before Senior Tenth Circuit Court Judge David M. Ebel. Judge Ebel has set a tentative trial date of December 7, 2009.
If found guilty of the false statement in a terrorism matter charge, Zazi faces not more than 8 years in federal prison, and a fine of up to $250,000, or both. Zazi was released on his original $50,000 unsecured bond with the continued condition of electronic monitoring.
The charges contained in the indictment are allegations, and Zazi is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Same old question.
Thou shall not kill.
Okay, I can understand that. But if given half a chance I would take this guy out so quick and not even blink. Because sure millions of lives are worth more in a land built on Gods principles, than an that of an inhuman animal.

Abu al-Yazid Mending Fences with Hamas
Thomas Hegghammer
July 10th, 2009 | Arab media, Hamas, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, propaganda
I
SNIPPET: The most significant part of the interview was Abu al-Yazids endorsement of Hamas. We support the sincere mujahidin in Palestine, even the mujahidin of Hamas. We support them and help them; they are our brothers; we and they have the same ideology and the same method, Abu al-Yazid said. This is quite a different message from that of Ayman al-Zawahiri and Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, who have been relentless in their criticism of Hamas in the past few years.
Not surprisingly, this caused quite a debate on the forums (see also here and here), where Hamas has long been subject of criticism (see e.g. here, here and here).
Abu al-Yazids statement was clearly an attempt by al-Qaida to mend fences with the broader Islamist movement and reach out to a wider audience. His choice of podium was surely no coincidence, for he is well aware that most al-Jazeera viewers are sympathetic to Hamas.
It has been a while since I heard a top al-Qaida member speak as clearly and straightforwardly as Abu al-Yazid did here. He gave simple and seemingly honest answers to questions about al-Qaidas organizational structure in Afghanistan, attacks called off against the US, the issue of two Islamic emirates (Iraq and Afghanistan), and many other things. Rob at the Shack is also right that overall, Abu al-Yazids remarks were not outlandishly radical when seen from the Arab street (the nuclear remark apart, obviously).
With the Abu al-Yazid interview, al-Qaida undoubtedly regained some of the popular support lost over the past few years. It is a reminder of how good al-Qaida can be at PR when they want to.
