CAROL Pullar feared her Kilmore East house would be destroyed in the Black Saturday inferno. Returning the day after, she was thrilled it had been spared and surprised by a note left on her kitchen table.
"Dear residents, your home was under severe frontal and spot attack. Diamond Creek tanker 2 and its composite crew were able to protect your home and at times fire was at your doorstep. I sincerely appologise (sic) but for the 3 hrs we were here we had to use the water out of your tanks."
It finished with a postscript: "Back door was open. We had ran dry of drinking water. $5 for orange juice under circumstances. Hope you don't mind."
Ms Pullar said she was stunned and grateful for the honesty of the firefighters.
"It was so incongruous that after hours looking after the house that they took the time to write the note," she said.
Brendan Mimmo, lieutenant of the Diamond Creek fire crew that protected Ms Pullar's 18ha property, said he felt compelled to write the note after his thirsty crew of five drank two litres of orange juice from Ms Pullar's fridge.
"We had a bit over a cup each, just enough to quench our thirst and keep us going," Mr Mimmo said.
"We were in their home, they weren't there, and I would hate to have left them wondering who had been through their house.
"We protected their property, but that didn't give us the right to go in and help ourselves. Paying for the orange juice was just the right thing to do."
Mr Mimmo said he also felt bad that some of the crew had accidentally muddied the carpets with their dirty boots.

How do we get people so fine, and politicians so foul.

If you could answer that you could rule the world.
It’s because firemen know they are here to serve, not to rule and besides that they risk their necks, not step on yours.
Ding Ding Ding!
No more calls please, we have a winner!
That gave me a pleasant laugh. I do have some ideas, however :)
There isn’t anything more attractive than a good man.
Maybe a start to answering that is to acknowledge that, with few exceptions, politicians are trying to sell you what they think you want. They start out deceptively.
