Senate's 'Gang of Six' near closure on health bill

By Jennifer Haberkorn

The Senate Finance Committee's "Gang of Six" is working to strengthen the citizenship requirements for obtaining health care coverage - a hot topic highlighted by Rep. Joe Wilsons "You lie!" outburst during President Obama's congressional address.

The group also is looking at a new medical-malpractice provision, pursuing Mr. Obamas call for such a money-saving measure that is coveted by Republican lawmakers.

Committee Chairman Max Baucus, Montana Democrat, also said Friday that members of the bipartisan negotiating team could have a response to Mr. Obama's proposal on Monday. Mr. Baucus plans to release a formal health care overhaul proposal early next week, with or without Republican support.

"We are starting to reach closure," he said, adding that Monday could be the Gang of Six's last meeting.

The group of three Republicans and three Democrats has been trying to find a bipartisan compromise for weeks, but hope that all six will sign on is dimming.

Mr. Baucus said he planned to work through the weekend to settle the final points of contention, which include how to expand Medicaid and to what extent. To that end, the group will speak Monday with state governors, who would face the bills from new enrollees.

The medical malpractice provision likely will help encourage Republican support. The group is working on a variation of legislation introduced in 2007 by Mr. Baucus and Sen. Michael B. Enzi of Wyoming, one of the Republicans in the room.

That bill would have issued grants to states to set up alternatives to the current tort litigation system, with the goal of bringing down costs by communicating errors early and setting "reasonable" limits to compensation.

The Six Buffoons can “strengthen” citizenship requirements all they want. Once CommieCare is passed, CommieCare becomes a “right”. The courts have ruled over and over again that you can’t deny constitutional rights to illegal aliens or Islamofascist terrorists.

If there is a ‘public option’ or there are ‘co-ops’ it will be the downfall of our once wonderful nation. Pray for our country.

If true, those would be three Republicans I wish didn’t exist anymore.
They need to be beaten in primaries real bad IMO.

Republicans are completely brain-dead, they are the UN of American politics.

RINOs Caving In!

In order for their actions to qualify as "caving in," it would be necessary for their circumstances to be significantly adverse, with a disastrous defeat all too likely. But these Republican Senators are in no such situation. Far from it. Consequently, the only fair way to characterize their actions is a back-stabbing, traitorous betrayal of their allies and fellow Republicans.

public option = trojan horse!!!

Why can’t they just shut up and let the Dems take ownership of this mess. McCain would be president if he had not stopped the campaign to fly back and “solve” the economic crisis which is still goigg in case he had not noticed. Geez, what a bunch of buffoons or is that baboons?! :(

“Hope is dimming that all six will sign on.”

Enzi is an accountant, so he shouldn’t sign onto this monstronsity.

Grassley is dumb enough to sign, but will he risk it?

Snowe is dying to sign, but has said that she doesn’t want to be the lone Republican.

No problem for her there, she is truly a Republican In Name Only.

We all know that all/most of the enticements for Republicans will get stripped out during conference committee.

So why would the gang of six support the bill? Don’t these Republicans care about the final outcome?

You might be onto something. The Court will stretch the Equal Protection Clause (all what is needed is a 5/4 vote) to extend this “health benefit” to illegals.

Of course Enzi and Grassley will sign on. They didn’t join this group to not sign on to a healthcare bill.

Yes. They want the same "final outcome" as their Democrat allies.

Why even label them as (R)s? They are all part of the corrupt "Two-Party Cartel" who gets their marching orders from the elites.

Yes, they care about the final outcome which for them is the SRM and the RATS saying nice things about them.

This is Baucus bloviating.

I don't see Grassley going for it.

Keep calling your people, people.

Strengthen their hand.

Are the RINO's caving or are hopes "dimming" that they will sign? Looks like a contradiction in what's being reported.
