'Taxpayer March' in D.C. Attracts Party Leaders, but Some Are Wary.
BY DAN EGGEN & PERRY BACON JR.
With tens of thousands of conservative protesters expected to gather in Washington on Saturday for a "Taxpayer March on D.C.," Republican officials are attempting to capitalize on a movement that lately has galvanized anti-Obama activists more effectively than the party's elected leaders in Washington.
Searching for ways to compete with Democrats after two consecutive electoral drubbings, Republicans have moved past earlier uncertainty about the protesters, who organized nationwide rallies this summer that have threatened Democratic health-care plans and eroded President Obama's standing with the public.
Several key Republican lawmakers, including House GOP Chairman Mike Pence of Indiana, have helped to drum up support for the march and are slated to deliver speeches to the crowd.
But top Republican strategists and many party observers also worry about the impact that the most extreme protesters might have on the party's image, including those who carry swastika signs or obsess over the veracity of Obama's Hawaiian birth.
Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and other Republicans, said there is an "opportunity for Republicans" to tap into legitimate fears about an overreaching federal government. But he said that "right-wing nutballs are aligning themselves with these movements" and are dominating media coverage.
"It's bad for Republicans because in the absence of any real leadership, the freaks fill the void and define the party," McKinnon said.

Leave it to McCain’s thugs to attack conservatives on the morning of the 9/12 March on DC.
McCain’s just jealous because he could never bring in the crowds until Sarah joined him and he knows we can’t stand him...lol!
Hahahahaha. That is a good picture of McQueeg. He just does not get it. I guess it was alright for Obama to lie to a joint session of Congress according to McQueeg.
To Dream: Sarah Palin shows up in Washington tomorrow morning. Now THAT would be a hoot.
McCain is soooo 2008....or maybe 1774....
Must've caught the Pelosi Bug.
If they want to come on board it will be OUR RULES!
McCain is the modern version of Bob Michels. He had rather be accepted in Beltway circles than win. IAC, here is a guy whose political career was based on his hero status and his 2nd Wife’s money. And his national campaigns have been disasters.
Apparently, the McCain wing cannot shut up or stand aside.
Mike Pence, John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Jim DeMint ALL plan to deliver speeches !!!
I’ll be back to comment, after I do a little research on this “Mark Souder” guy (US Rep - R -Indiana) who seems to be worrying about a primary challenge from a “Tea Party activist.” !!!!!
Are robust primaries wrong? NOT in my book.
They’re definitely drinking Pelosi’s bathwater...
Mark McKinnon, a “former” advisor to McCain.
Who is this guy? He sounds like a discarded banana skin- all peeled out with no substance and would not be picked up by anyone (Oh, except WaPo)
Been to a two Tea Parties including the Express New Lenox, Illinois 10,000-strong event last Monday and have yet to see a "swastika". And, RINOs, maybe you can tag along if you wish but don't get in the way.
Look like his role was as a Manchurian Candidate of sorts after all but only within GOP ranks.
My advice to GOP politician’s?
Stay the Hell away if you are not a friend of limited government. Your record will speak for you. Think otherwise than speak to Cornyn.
Do not try and co-opt to your own gain. You will be booed.
Do not think you can insult Americans by calling us Nazi’s as was done in this column and benefit from the drive of these activists. You are part of the problem. We don’t want you there.
Mark Souder looks all right. I guess he just doesn’t want any primary challengers.
Here’s what he told a local news outlet after Obama’s speech:
We spoke to third district Congressman Mark Souder who said he was disappointed in the address, calling it divisive, and dishonest.
He didn’t move the debate forward. That was the most divisive speech I’ve ever heard to a joint session of Congress, said Souder. He in effect distorted the truth and mocked the people from my district who have concerns and who actually read the bill.
Remember McKinnon quit the campaign beause he didn’t want to do anything nasty against Obama... McCain surrounded himself with the worst advisors imaginable...
If I were a backstabbing Rino, I would be worried about the Republican-Republicans in the party, too. They are worried about keeping the reigns of the party’s power. Like I have said before, they are perfectly happy with a Rino minority making socialist deals in backrooms with the Marxists.
They do need to go. We need to target a few of them and take them out the way they targeted conservatives over the last couple of elections. Interesting McCain mentions the birth certificate issue. I would be real worried about any truth coming out about that if I were him too. He might have led the GOP down a treasonous path.
McCain lost two major Presidential elections. He blew the most important one of our lifetime. Read ‘em and weep.
