President Barack Obama this week has been laying the foundation for Senate Democrats to use a controversial budget maneuver to pass healthcare reform.
By offering Republicans olive branches during his address to Congress on Wednesday, Obama has set up a win-win situation. If GOP lawmakers embrace compromise, a healthcare bill would pass Congress easily. But the more likely scenario is that Republicans will continue to oppose Obamas plan, and the president later this fall will be able to note he tried to strike a deal with the GOP but could not.
That will set up a Democratic argument that Senate leaders have been forced to use a partisan budget tool known as reconciliation to pass a health bill through the Senate by a simple majority, instead of 60 votes. Under the budget plan they passed earlier this year, Democrats could invoke the reconciliation process on Oct. 15.

Look at this statement: "If you misrepresent the contents of this bill, we will call you out."
Joe Wilson's response: "President Obama, you are misrepresenting the contents of this bill, and I am calling you out."
Democrat and media response: "Totally unacceptable! I can't believe he said that! What nerve!"
The Democrats are not engaging in political dsicussion anymore. They want what they want, and they expect that their opposition will just shut up and take it. And John McCain supports that.
This article reads like it could have been written by Rahm Emanuel or David Axelrod.
In Cincinnati on Monday, Obama blamed the "usual bickering in Washington" for the "funk" supporters of healthcare reform were enduring. And in a discussion with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., on Tuesday, Obama said "there are a lot of politicians like that who, all they're thinking about is just, How do I get reelected? and so they never actually get anything done."
Then on Wednesday night, Obama sought to portray his health reform plan as one that contains both Republican and Democratic ideas.
"The time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed," Obama said. "Now is the season for action."
Rep. Joe Wilsons (R-S.C.) outburst on Wednesday was an unexpected gift to the White House, accentuating Obamas point that bitter politics is getting in the way of improving the healthcare of Americans.
His speech looks to be an exact set-up for this.
Charles Krauthammer said it correctly. 0bama is a snake oil salesman.
I don't believe he will get away with this. Hardcore liberals think he is a visionary. But the Independent voters and seniors are on to him!
The argument they were “forced” won’t fly even if they do use the nuke option. They will do so at their own risk.
I’m not one who believes once it is passed, if that happens, that it cannot be either undone or so drastically amended it will bear little or no resemblance to what this bozo wants for us today. And once the libs open Pandora’s box by using the nuke option they will have forever changed the rules of the game and will themselves suffer when they lose control of the Congress which, of course they will do at some point.
The liberals have always been unable to foresee the consequences of their actions and this is merely another example.
“go nuclear”
Let’s rock Kenyan!
“Look at this statement: “If you misrepresent the contents of this bill, we will call you out.””
This comment could easily backfire on Obama and end up in a very effective Repub tv ad outlining his inaccuracies.
The article states that Jow Wilson was a gift to the WH.
BUT the Independent voters all agree with Joe Wilson.
The WH is banking on Alinsky tactics working on many fools. What they don’t see... because they are blinded with power, is that it only pleases his hardcore left base. All else see what is going on.
Obama is way to suspiciously obsessed with a healthcare reform.
To me it reeks of an ulterior motive and I suspect and ultimately could show that Obama is using this as a keystone approach to advance socialism upon America, with a passing of this bill he will open up a new multi lane highway of directives where he can make laws, restrictions and selections of services by the Federal Government into every single American’s daily lifestyle.
Its a perfect host program to evolve into a pogrom.
—elections have consequences—and for those who think this stuff will get repealed when “we” “take control”, what has ever been repealed as for as federal legislation since Prohibition?
I don’t think anyone honestly believes that Obama has offered anything in the way of “olive branches”. Reconciliation will not be a “win” at all. The public will it as a nakedly partisan tactic to push a bill they don’t want, and the Republicans will likely be able to turn it into swiss cheese with parliamentary tactics.
“+++I hope they do it. Then when we take power in 2010 we can ram whatever we want down their throats without worrying about that pesky filibuster.++++”
Is it just me? Am I the only one that thinks 2010 ain’t going to make a difference? I feel the system has become so corrupt that I have no idea who to trust...Republicans included. These radical groups have a lot of money and power, they ain’t going to let the 2010 election stop them. They’ll either use voter fraud or plant Rinos that speak eloquently to get into office then pull a Arlen Specter!!
US citizens, regardless of political party, need to send a message loud and clear to those who would lead: you work for us, you will listen, or you will be fired, period. I don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, etc. When they start acting like they know best and we don't matter, they are gone.
IMO it won’t happen. This is just more pressure to get the Dems to unify and to scare a few Reps into joining a “compromise.”
Ecactly. 0bama was told when the rats returned from vacations WHO it was that is ticked off beyond belief.
(Of course conservatives are the MOST ticked, off 0bama could give a rats petard about) INDEPENDENTS and seniors... 0bama’s teleprompter speech was set up to appeal to these exact people...
AND THEY THINK IT WORKED!
I agree with you. It is a vicious cycle.
