Tall People Are Happier Than Petite Peers, Princeton Test Shows

Taller People Make Happier People, Study Shows

Taller people appear to live happier lives, according to a new study.

Researchers conducted a phone survey among more than 454,065 adults aged 18 and older between January 2008 and April 2009.

Participants were asked to give their height as well as answer questions about their standard of living.

Writing in the journal Economics and Human Biology, researchers said they used the Cantril "self-measuring striving scale", which allows participants to describe their quality of life through imagining a “life ladder” with rungs numbered from zero to 10 at the top.

The top rung is associated with the “best possible life for you” and the bottom rung is the “worst possible life for you”.

Researchers found that taller people reported being more happy with their life than those who were shorter.

Men who were taller than 5ft 10in ranked themselves at an average of 6.55 on the ladder scale. Men who were below average height, ranked themselves at an average of 6.41.

Among women, those who were taller than an average height of 5ft 4in ranked themselves 6.64, compared to 6.55 in shorter women.

Researchers also noted that men and women who were above average in terms of height were more likely to report overall happiness and less likely to report sadness.

"Surprisingly people who say that their lives are the 'best possible' are slightly shorter on average than those who are a step or two below,” Angus Deaton from Princeton University told BBC News.

"Perhaps the 8 percent of people who think their lives cannot be improved are different in other respects."

Additionally, they found that taller men reported worrying less.

"There's no direct correlation between income and happiness - surveys going back years show that,” psychologist Dr Colin Gill told BBC Health.

"But there does appear to be a correlation between height and happiness and height and income.

"If you look at this study, the people who are happiest are not the very tallest. There is a threshold of height tolerance - at about 6ft 5in to 6ft 6in.

"Height does matter, it's always mattered for a very obvious reason - when you are born you are shorter than the people who look after you and have authority over you,” he added. “And that power relationship never reverses."

The people of this country paid for this study? What a bunch of fools. Is there not something else they could be doing?

My husband is 6’5” and he is kinda grumpy. I’m 5’5” and cheerful.

It’s very hard to find pants that are size 36 x 36, let me tell you, and there are very few cars that fit him well (steering wheel must be able to pivot up off the knees).

I’m too tall for a Porsche 911. I need a Porsche 9101.

I am generally a very happy person.

I don’t remember any complaints about my size.

And eat more.

My girlfriend in high school, who actually did some modeling, was 6'1" and she would literally pound down three sandwiches a day (just for lunch!) and I would be in disbelief because she was thin as a rail. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.:)

Exactly! AND we can see over everybody’s heads at parades. What's not to be happy about?

If one examines the biographies of some of the most successful people in the world, a common thread among many of them is long periods of deep frustration and pain. I guess happiness is not as strong a motivator.

I'm not buying it. If you look at successful rulers, that may be right, but I look at a lot of very happy athletes like Elway, Foreman, Barkeley, Woods, McEnroe, etc. and they look as happy as can be.

Someday when I can finally afford a Porsche 911, I will at least be able to fit in it, and if I’m not too old by then...

I aspire to be able to drive Porsche or Ferrari all around town with the turn signal constantly on.

That may explain why I've never suffered short man's syndrome,

I play a lot of sports and despite my lack of physical ability, I do my fair share of winning. I find tall people to be mostly uncoordinated boobs. If you are tall and coordinated, you are probably a pro athlete, but the rest of them are awkward and generally clumsy.

I'm 5-9 and I DO HAVE SHORT MAN'S SYNDROME, in that when I see a tall person, I'm thinking "fresh meat, I'm going to grind him to a pulp". I like being short for athletics. It makes me an aggressive person in all other aspects of life.

Success through physical exertion is not for all- what I meant was, success in endeavours that required more than a good body. Take politics, business, even entertainment.

Also, physical activity rewards the body through the production of endorphins.

There’s also another truth- human male bones stop growing when the body begins producing large doses of testosterone- which, in turn drives aggression. If you look at short people, most of them are hairier than the tall, lanky ones. This is another side-effect of early-onset puberty.

The aggression is probably what drives them to success.

Here in North Carolina, the natives don't use turn signals. I've been told it's so they can tell who the Yankees are...
