Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has been named as the fourth "American Idol" judge.
FOX announced this evening that Ellen will be joining Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson on the "American Idol" judging panel in the wake of Paula Abdul's departure. She will join the panel after the initial auditions, so I'm hoping that means she is there for Hollywood Week.
DeGeneres had this to say: "I'm thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text in my vote."
"I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the "American Idol" family," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can't wait for this next season to begin."
From the FOX press release: "A beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer, DeGeneres' distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world. DeGeneres has made a home for herself in the daytime arena with her hit syndicated talk show, 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show.' The show, now entering its seventh season, won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host four years in a row and has earned a total of 29 Daytime Emmy Awards."

Who said it did? I’m taking issue with people who somehow rationalize it’s okay to watch the show with openly gay contestants but not okay for them with an openly gay judge. Their moral outrage isn’t consistent.
As for her qualifications, I don’t care. I no longer watch this show. Far as I’m aware singing is only part of it. Popularity plays a role as do the manipulations of the show’s producer’s. She can read her lines as well as Paula can. That about sums up the role of the judges these days.
Proof that the queer victim class outranks the black victim class.
A kind heart should take the place of any kind of knowledge of the music business?
It would be like someone being elected POTUS with no experience, no qualifications, and no accomplishments.
Oh, wait...
Not is this household. Never.
for the seventh and last season of the show
.
It counts with me.
I like her.

Wow this will free up tons of my time :) I’ll say I’m happy with this choice. Yay!
AI is such a HUGE waste of time anyway.
Was it OK for Paula and Kara to fool around kissing each other? People ate that up.
And Paula was either drunk or stoned most of the time. Did that turn people off? Nahhh.
My husband and I tune into Susie Orman every week. Should we quit taking her advice cuz she's gay? I don't think so..
Just my 2 cents..It makes no difference to me who watches Idol..I'll still watch.
Me too.
Why don't all these queers have their own TV channel and leave the main stream channels for normal folks?
I appreciate your point of view.
The dynamics of the show will change drastically without Paula. Many of us used to tune in each week just to see how spacy and outrageous Paula would be. She was often the topic of delightful satire on jonny’s FR thread.
We can’t do that with Ellen. First of all, we would be accused of homophobia. Secondly, Ellen is going to be too darn kind to the contestants. That does not make for good drama.
I am willing to give Ellen a chance. If she doesn’t get in-your-face political on the show, she might work out.
Anyway, I have to watch if I want to fully participate in the weekly snarking on jonny’s thread.
The thread is often better than the actual show.
Yes, she is.
It's about people who want instant fame and want it now without working for it. It was a lottery. It's ALL about instant gratification and ego even if they posses no talent.
bad move:
Her sitcom show failed - had to do the lezbo kiss to boost ratings and that didn’t work.
Her talkshow failed
Her as judge Dancing W/Stars Failed.
plus she is not funny to general public. heck I would injoy Woopi over her.
It was better with 3 judges anyway.
My prediction is that this will result in a huge ratings plunge that will result in Paul Abdul returning to the show after this season. But, just like when Patrick Duffy departed Dallas and returned, the damage will be done.
Ellen has a sense of humor along the same lines as Steve Martin. I can't define it, but you'll see..
And like you, I do look forward to reading the remarks on jonny's thread..:)

Incredibly, you're unconcerned that Degenerate is UNQUALIFIED for the job. The whole of the judges is to give advice to the contestants and audience in determining a winner.
I didn't know Simon sang? Does he?
sw
Nope. Obama supporter
She ZERO experience in the music business.
I didn't know Simon sang?
Cowell has been a PRODUCER in the music industry for decades. Randy Jackson has been a producer as well as guitarist. Abdul and Dioguardi have been singers and/or songwriters.
So, apparently because believe it's okay to have someone completely ignorant of the music because she is a homosexual?
