Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has been named as the fourth "American Idol" judge.
FOX announced this evening that Ellen will be joining Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson on the "American Idol" judging panel in the wake of Paula Abdul's departure. She will join the panel after the initial auditions, so I'm hoping that means she is there for Hollywood Week.
DeGeneres had this to say: "I'm thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text in my vote."
"I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the "American Idol" family," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can't wait for this next season to begin."
From the FOX press release: "A beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer, DeGeneres' distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world. DeGeneres has made a home for herself in the daytime arena with her hit syndicated talk show, 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show.' The show, now entering its seventh season, won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host four years in a row and has earned a total of 29 Daytime Emmy Awards."

That’s what I’m talkin’ about! You’re not getting that kind of beautiful cleavage from Ellen!!
This was the one mindless entertainment show that I actually enjoyed following and was able to turn politics off for an hour each week. Fox screwed up big time. I won’t be watching this season.
She has a kind heart. Doesn’t that count for anything with you people?
Does Ellen’s contract require that she abuse prescription medication like Paula?
I can’t boycott something I don’t watch to begin with. But this is truly a stupid move.
Did they narrow the choices down to Ellen and Rosie?
Network Ratings Suicide 101 ;-)
I think she’s funny too, even though she’s as liberal as they come.
On the other hand, I don’t find Dennis Miller funny at all.
Coming soon:
Perez Helton replaces Simon Cowell as American Idol judge...
Absolutely. It was enough that loyal, long-time viewers were going to have to adjust to Paula not being there. Now we have to deal with Ellen. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. Why change a show that's been a hit for several years. Makes no sense.
I note everyone got their contracts signed before the announcement of Ellen as a fourth Judge. I wonder what would have been the outcome of the contract negotiations if they announced her addition before the contracts were negotiated. Oh, wait, it’s Hollywood, never mind...
I feel the same, FRiend. I only used to watch the auditions because they were hilarious, but I won't even watch that anymore.
I was even willing to watch the auditions at least if they replaced Paula with that airhead spice girl. Now they can stuff it.
Geeze...at least Paula Abdul had some talent (and looks) at one time.Ellen Degenerate has always been breathtakingly ugly and utterly talentless. And always will be.
They have jumped the shark on this one.
Obviously Simon is not as smart as we thought he was. He doesn’t know his main audience. AI was looked at as a family show but NO MORE. We won’t be watching it and I bet he lost at least 1/3 if his viewership. Ellen has NOTHING to do with the music business. This is blatant “in your face.” Simon was wrong about Country Music and America had to show him with Carrie Underwood and Pickles that we love our clean cut down to earth kids. Then they put that drag queen up last year and let him go through every week, that almost lost us but this year they have gone over the top with Ellen. Sorry Simon you be one dumb man.
What the hell does she know about music? Terrible choice.
Um, Rush Limbaugh is pretty damn funny, too. Ya think it might smack of a political agenda to bring him on to the show when he has no qualifications to be a judge?
Ditto. I will not be watching Idol anymore.
The show represented the American dream -- ordinary people getting an opportunity at fame. And, a lot of the contestants have been Christians that have been open about their beliefs.
So, it is pretty obvious Fox is clueless about who its audience is for the program and that pushing a Hollywood social agenda upon viewers will be a disaster. That combined with a popular judge leaving the program is going be a disaster.
As Simon Cowell always says, "It is a singing competition." Degenerate knows nothing about singing.
