CANTON .The second of two Tea Party Express buses rolled out of downtown Canton at about 12:45 p.m.
Departure of the buses followed what had been a festive event and rally that carried a message endorsing limited government, promoting the free market and expecting elected officials to uphold the Constitution and act fiscally responsible.
The event at the Kresge lot on Market Avenue N lasted more than two hours. At least a few thousand people appeared to be in attendance. Organizers estimated the crowd at about 5,000.
Some of those attending came from outside Stark County, including from Medina, Columbus, Chicago, Cleveland and New York. Others came from the Canton, Massillon and Alliance areas.
Those in the audience cheered boisterously when speakers talked about government policies and issues such as health care reform. Signs and American flags were in abundance.
One sign read: Baroke. Another read: So youre for abortion but against killing terrorists.
Other signs were emblazoned with: Fox Rocks Fair and Balanced, No Socialized Medicine and Dont Trust Obama. He Lies.
Another sign carried images of President Obama and Adolf Hitler and read, Hitler gave great speeches, too.
Near the end of the event, there was a military tribute, including a musical performance and words from the mother of a Marine.
From Canton, the Tea Party Express national tour was headed to stops today in the Pittsburgh area and in Johnstown, Pa. Launched Aug. 28, the tour ends Sept. 12 with the Taxpayer March in Washington, D.C. Canton was the only Ohio stop.
I think it was great to get this many people, said Amy Kremer, national coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots. Its really amazing to get this many people out here on a work day and on a school day in the middle of the week...
Theres never been a period in American history where your average citizen has been so involved and so engaged with whats going on in government, said Kremer, who has been on the entire tour.
Bill and Carol St. John from Jefferson, N.Y., were among the hundreds on hand. They are on vacation and planned their trip to include Wednesdays rally.
It is a way of voicing our displeasure about where the government is going, Bill St. John said.
He is upset about health care reform and taxes on small business.
Barbara Bingham of Perry Township said she loves capitalism and doesnt want to see our country go the route of socialism.
She held a sign:
Congress say no to B.O. His policies stink.
She stood with Amy Casper of Jackson Township. Casper didnt think the presidents address to the schools Tuesday was appropriate.
Obama shouldnt have brought politics into the schools, Casper said. I think it was a very political move given the health care speech is tonight. Hes using our kids to deliver his message.
She held a sign that read: Put God not Obama in schools.
Four city police officers providing security for the event said there were no major problems. The vast majority in attendance cheered the speakers and congregated in a festive atmosphere.
A few spirited arguments broke out between an estimated 15-30 pro-union and pro-health care reform people and tea party supporters. While there were some raised voices, folks still were civil.
Sharon Barnett and her husband, Floyd, drove to Canton from Circleville to take part in todays Tea Party Express rally.
Ås the speakers addressed the crowd, she held a sign indicating rose-colored glasses.
Take a clear look at what Washington is trying to do to our country, it read.
She said she is concerned about health care reform, specifically care for freeloaders, illegal residents and people who didnt work for it.
The Barnetts were joined by Floyds sister, Betty Shambaugh of Cuyahoga Falls.

Excellent! Thanks fellow Ohioan, Las Vegas Dave!
Dave! That’s a great turnout! Wish I could’ve gone, but I’m on 24 hour emergency call, and can’t stray that far away. Wonder what the turnout would’ve been up here in the Cleveland area?
Great pics and thank you for the special ping Dave :)
I'll be watching for further pics from Dollycali too.
The one of the WWII Vet holding the sign that said he was still fighting for freedom really hit home, may God bless him.
