Obama will promote -- but not demand -- 'public option' for healthcare
In the run-up to tonight's speech, Obama and his staff let it be known that he will insist on some details, such as not increasing the deficit. But he won't make the public option a deal-breaker.
September 9, 2009.
Reporting from Washington - With a nationally televised prime-time address to Congress tonight, President Barack Obama hopes to clarify and promote -- but not insist upon -- a "public option" in the health-insurance overhaul that he is seeking as part of a plan that he intends "to get done this year."
"There are some principles that, if they are not embodied in the bill, I will not sign it," Obama said in an interview aired by ABC News' "Good Morning America" today.
Yet the president and aides today have stopped short of drawing a line in the sand for the so-called public option, offering government-run health insurance to those who cannot find coverage privately.
The president most likely will not demand the public option, but will make an argument for it during tonight's address to Congress and the public, according to a senior administration official.
"This is not a national debate about whether we have a public option," the senior administration official said, requesting anonymity in advance of the president's speech. "It is whether we bring choice and competition" to the marketplace.

Demand? LOL
It is whether we bring choice and competition” to the marketplace.
Liar, Liar, Pants on fire
That’s tantamount to saying paying taxes is voluntary. BO is a flaming socialist. He wants government run health care so bad he can taste it.
...and its not going to change a thing...
The majority of Americans will continue to be against ObamaCare and healthcare OVERHAUL.
But hey, you listen to Gibbs this morning and polls...as with the will of the people...have no bearing on what Barry and company are planning to do with ObamaCare.....to their own demise. Bet.
That "bump, bump" you just heard was the Obama bus running over Pelosi.
We need to label these bills accurately as TAX BILLS.
Kill the 0bamacare Tax Bill!
Promoter in Chief
(Didn’t the Left make a lot of fun for Bush being a cheerleader in his college days?)
This is bogus. I have a friend whose husband suffers from a rare, degenerative disorder. When he sought a quote for health insurance, the person helping him told him he would be embarrassed to read my friend the quote. In other words, he is one of the people who “cannot get insurance.”
ANYONE will be able to get insurance if they are willing and able to pay a high enough price - sometimes that price is ABSURDLY high. The fact is, if the government were “picking up the tab” for the insurance for even my friend's husband, he or anyone else can get coverage without a public option.
That's why the GOP has a real opportunity to kill a government plan even if a “cover-all” plan gets passed. They can simply point to the fact that there is no situation in which a person could not get covered with the government “picking up the tab” for the monthly payments. Someone will take that money - some private business - and find a way to make a profit in the long-run.
Remember what he said....”Our time has come”. He only cares about the ghettos, remember also, that is where he came from. Take from the working stiff and give it to the drug dealers.
Tonight, the President will address a joint session of Congress, to again outline what he would like to see in healthcare reform.
I hope the President will turn a new page in the healthcare debate, setting aside demands for a government-run, taxpayer-funded healthcare system, and instead advocate commonsense reforms that will reduce costs and increase access to quality healthcare for everyone, regardless of pre-existing conditions.
Merely suggesting cosmetic changes, such as renaming the public option a "co-op" or inserting a "trigger," will not cut it for me or for my constituents, who are deeply concerned about the many flaws in the current House bill.
I hope to hear the President commit to medical malpractice reform that could save us as much as $200 billion per year. Without reform, medical costs will continue to rise and doctors will continue to be forced to practice defensive medicine.
I hope the President will voice his support for Association Health Plans (AHPs) so that small businesses can band together and get the same discounts on health insurance for their employees that big companies enjoy.
Finally, I hope the President will join Members on both sides of the aisle to end the waste, fraud and abuse plaguing Medicare and robbing seniors of billions in much-needed health benefits.
This is what I'll be listening for tonight. As always, I welcome your views on this or any other issue that interests you. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of assistance to you.
Sincerely,
Judy Biggert Member of Congress
“such as not increasing the deficit.”
I have the solution. Stop spending Federal money.
Does he really think this is going to happen?
That's their idea of a detail?
Everything Obama ever learned about executive planning came from the South Park Gnomes.
It’s called having it both ways. Let’s see if Pelosi still thinks it is a dealbreaker.
I know, really.
I heard him on the radio a week or two ago announcing the H1N1 flu vaccine program, and reassuring everyone that it was not mandatory.
I thought....WHAT? So mandatory is an option he chose not to exercise THIS TIME?
I'm just bull-headed enough to refuse the vaccine if it becomes "mandatory".
This is not OBAMACARE... it is Progressive CARE. Obama will not bail on the desire for a public option. He owes the Progressive in Congress big time because 263 Super Delegates that are Senators and Representatives (maybe more) put Obama over the top and gave him the nomination.
I hope whoever does the counter speech, speaks from the stairs of the US Treasury Building. The best idea would be to hold up a wad of bills and then burn them because that is what any of these plans that cover illegal aliens and have a governmentoption will do. I hope he also points out the program began as a health care improvement but now is only about who pays and who is on the dole, nothimg more.
