Obama's school speech is different.

While the left is engaged in damage control over Obama's speech to our school children by pointing out that both Reagan and H.W. Bush did the very same thing, there is a difference.

Even if Reagan and Bush Sr. both excluded the local school boards from exercising their legal duty in authorizing access by public officials to public school children, Obama's action was different. Notifying local school boards would have meant notifying parents of the upcoming event and brought the whole matter of the accompanying study guides into question. By not placing the matter before the local school boards, Obama avoided the time delay that would have inevitably ensued when local school officials realized the issue of the lesson plan created by the DOE and distributed to them was illegal.

Parents were right to object to Obama's approach. Their public institutions created to safeguard against illegal access by public officials to their children while in the custody of the state was usurped. I would ask us all to re-address this issue with our Congressional representatives after the 2010 elections with an idea of strengthening the guidelines and statutory controls in this area to insure that all local school boards are never again bypassed when a public official wants to address our children without their parent's knowledge or consent.

Thanks, David. I had a back and forth with the chairman of our school board who took exception to my statement that this speech was unprecedented - he quoted the lib line of Bush, etc did it - and I plan to nail him to the wall at the next schbd mtg - he’s a lib POS and needs to go...we are pretty conservative in this county in VA.

There’s another difference, I believe. Didn’t the Dims drag a bunch of executive branch types up to the Hill and hold hearings when Bush 41 spoke to the kids?

The problem is that while Reagan’s and Bush’s speeches to school children avoided any political agenda, there were definite undertones of a political and social agenda in it. Parents of young impressionable children were right to be disturbed by it. The liberal left is out to destroy the traditional family unit through various means but especially by supporting such issues as gay marriage, abortion, ridicule of religion, denunciation of the military and any outward form of patriotism including the Pledge of Allegiance, our country’s flag, the National Anthem, and any reference to God on our currency, revisionist history and the general trashing of the US Constitution in order to advance their far left communist Marxist agenda.

I was a public school teacher during the years when these speeches took place. I do not recall even knowing about them. Does anyone who was a teacher, student or parent recall their being shown in classrooms?

They were carried by C-Span and thus available to be seen, but were probably mentioned with derision by the DBM, if at all, and, after the fact.

It’s my understanding that the earlier speeches were only seen by a very small number of students.
I don’t think they were shown on network stations, and many schools in that era did not have televisions with cable access to things like CSPAN.

Great. I am glad I could help. I can still remember the days I often went before my local school board. In fact, I was often referred to by the local press as an “oft-time critic of the school board”, a label I proudly accepted.

Reagan and Bush didn't have “lesson plans” nor did either one of them BEG the kids to support him. Reagan and Bush already HAD the support of the PARENTS. Obama trying to circumvent the parents like this is too obvious. It's right out of the Communist playbook - get to the kids!

JFK said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

So much for Obummer as the new JFK.

C'mon.....no politician, Republican or Democrat, can avoid a "political agenda" when giving a speech. That is why they call them polticians. Presidents should not give speeches to captive audiences of school children. Period.

Especially if that president has an agenda, hidden or otherwise, like Obummer.
