A White House panel of independent space experts says NASA's return-to-the-moon plan just won't fly.
...
However, President Barack Obama's expert panel said any plan to go beyond low-Earth orbit was "not viable" with current spending.

[Ap story severely snipped - just like the space program]. Report released today. "beyond low-Earth orbit" means Mars is out too. China, here is the high ground, yours for the taking. I guess Obama should have said a few words to the budding engineers in his school audience - don't bother kids, but we'll have a shovel waiting for you.

The more Chinese to the moon or Mars the merrier. I wish they’d all go.

The silver lining is that when either the Chinese or the Indians end up there, we’ll have a Sputnik moment and a reawakening of the culture of science and the spirit of exploration.
Did anyone expect anything else from the Obamawallahs?

Can we just take up donations or have a bake sale to raise the funds to send him there ourselves?

Well, golf clap to you, too, 0bama & science czar. Finding new space gadgets is so 20th century. Who needs another space blanket invention anyway. Have a cookie.

Yep. They want every penny they can steal from us to be spent on buying votes to ensure their power in perpetuity.
The space program is one of the few things besides the military that really speaks to American excellence and the realization of achievement of the highest possible individual goals, and the biggest picture of all when it comes to large, imaginative thinking outside the box. NASA programs are the mother of American ingenuity and “Yes We Can”, but ostammer and his commies have decided, “No We Won’t”.
This is yet another nail in the coffin of what was once a great nation, but it feels like the final nail. The golden age of America is truly dead with this decision.

I was just thinking - as an engineer - that it would be reasonably cost effective, if we sent Yobama to the moon. One way.
But on second thought, I think sending him only HALF-way to the moon would be even MORE cost-effective.
To: NonValueAdded
Oh, who needs research, exploration, technology, development, enterprise...we’re going to be on the union collective farm growing healthy vegetables for a few years until we get too old and expensive to keep alive (say, about age 40)...but that’s okay, because everybody in the country but the Dear Leader and his friends and family will have no reason to live anyway. The lights will literally be going out all over the US, and we will become the Third World hell-hole of Bambi’s fondest dreams.
Clearly, space exploration is going to be meaningless to us then.
