WASHINGTON (CNN) Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."
The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

Little Jazmin got a scholarship to Brown because she's illegal, she's Hispanic, and her parents didn't go to college. Too bad that scholarship wasn't awarded to an American citizen who's parents paid taxes and can't afford to send their kids to college. Has Jazmin thanked those tax paying Americans for education, health care, housing, food, and now the gravy for her college education?
Thank G-d for Dick Cheney.
You are right on about the ex-Presidents Club. They should go follow the best example of all Presidents, Washington, and retire to their own business. Instead we fund them in such away to create too classes of fools — them and us.
Why? There is no need to say anything about it. I think this is a mistake.
Well, it seems you didn't get it because you didn't read the article. The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans.
Why does she have to say anything at all?
EXACTLY
Lesson plans or not, is she operating under the false impression that the National Education Association will fail to urge students to ‘connect’ with the White House to make this nation better?
This pied piper is a real threat to our nation’s youth and the nation as a whole. If he wants to go over a cliff, and he has made it clear he does, then the prick should leave our children behind as he runs over it.
When we get a legitimate President of the United States, then the respect will follow.
>>Why is that?<<
There are certain pro-forma things that must be said by people who were in positions of prominence, especially FLOTUS and POTUS. That always means speaking good of all others in the office and supporting the office.
The fact that clinton, carter and now the TOTUS-reader flaunt those conventions don’t mean those conventions have disappeared.
Right! It’s the lesson plans put out (by The NEA?) the teachers after the speech that I object to. Other rhan “POOR ME, look at my pitifully poor and fatherless home and by working hard where I got to” message, which did not explain how he could afford to attend such high end schools, and the connections and promises he made to get there.
She says it because she has to.
************
No, she does not have to.
Someone asked her the question?
Why is Laura speaking out again when her husband opts to keep his mouth shut?
That’s what we did!!! By complaining, we forced Obama to write a speech that was acceptable, and to publish it ahead of time. And we forced the education department ot pull the lesson plan about “helping the President”.
Now, if we can learn how to advertise and accept victory, we’ll be in good shape.
I wonder if Mrs. Bush would feel the same way if Obama arrested either Dick Cheney or her husband for war crimes.
No. It is my profound respect for the office that incites the animus I may feel towards certain occupants of the office.
Even if that president does not respect the United States, apologizes for the country while on foreign soil, appoints self-avowed communists to White House positions, takes a wrecking ball to the Constitution, etc?
FR is turning into DU.
I think he just makes up that stuff about his own childhood. Does anyone really believe that his mother homeschooled him in Indonesia? What a load. He makes up stuff because no one will investigate and he has to pretend like he’s something he’s not. He’s the exact kind of person I tell my kids to stay away from and to not get suckered by.
Shes a nice old librarian, but her opinion is no more vaulable than mine. Ill be charitable. She is being naive. Obama hates this nation and should not be afforded any chance to do this.
He deserves none of the respect a traditional president gets. With them, we know they love America. But he is a communist enemy.
“With all due respect, Maam, Obama is a communist, and I am not going to tolerate one damned thing from him.”
BINGO!
