Laura Bush defends Obama school speech
CNN ^ | 09/07/2009

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."

The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school… (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized — not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

I kind of like this. It must twist the guts of progressives to be defended by a Bush.

It is not Laura Bush’s job to be anything other than very gracious and charming. And she does it perfectly.

I suggest to everyone here to actually read the CNN article. It is not really that supporting of this speech, and certainly doesn’t think children should be forced to listen to it or parents not allowed to opt out. She even mentions those egregious lesson plans.

Don’t forget, she is judging the revised copy. There would not be an uproar is “this” copy were the original script. This is one that is pretty tame, and does not ask the question “How can I help Obabma?” not America, not yourselves (in essay form, please.)

Sad to say but she should have kept her mouth shut like her husband did for years.

She says it because she has to.

Why is that? Is Laura among the 900 FBI files the Hildabeast still has in her possession?

This might explain the helplessness Dubya exhibited for 8 years...

The Bush train has already been taken off the main track and consigned to the rail yard to be put in mothballs.

A new train is now on the main track, rocketing towards national moral clarity picking up more passengers along the way and it is being led by the defiant Sarah Palin who does not countenance Marxists.

Mrs. Bush, your “compassionate conservative” train has run out of steam and diesel fuel and has grinded to a halt and been shoved aside. Accept it and move on. Nobody is looking to buy tickets for and be passengers on your train any longer.

I read it too.

It has to many attempts to get children to imprint on him.

I felt alone too.

I expect you to

Personal stories about himself.

Eff that.

He ain’t Parent in chief.

Sorry Mrs. Bush. I was not condemning of it until I read it.

Also how can he address K-12 with that speech?
Little kids wont understsand all that.

I would suggest she read Reagan’s text when he spoke to Jr High kids and see the vast difference in message.

Text: I’m working hard to fix up your classrooms and get you the books, equipment and computers you need to learn.

He is so kind. He is working hard to take our money, decide how it should be spent, and for whom it should be spent. He is a conman. He is not in partnership with God, and he is not in partnership with me, (a parent). Three more labor days, and hopefully this clown with be gone.

“It’s always about Barack Hussein Obama.”

Me, me, me ... I, I, I. Yep ... that’s 0bama. Seems to me that he’s just trying to boost his ratings. Constant campaign mode.

Laura, have you ever heard the term ‘useful idiot’?

It really bothers me when Republicans go out of their way to buttress the intents of those who seek to turn this nation into something akin to the U.S.S.R.

When Reagan and the first President Bush addressed the pupils of this nation, they didn’t have a ulterior motive. They wanted to encourage the children to apply themselves.

Obama is a horse of a different color, a jackass in fact. He has made it clear that he wants brown-shirt troops in this nation. He wants an adult and youth core along these lines. So when he addresses our children, it’s not with a neutral non-political statement. In fact, Obama had to withdraw part of his plan, the request for children to team up with the White House to make this nation better.

When Reagan and Bush addressed the children, there weren’t lesson plans developed to achieve maximum indoctrination and direct connection to them and their personal political motives.

Laura, you defend a man who would destroy what our Founding Fathers developed for us. His Czars are an end run on the U.S. Constitution and his plans for a brown-shirt children’s effort along the lines of the Hitler youth brigades is not something you should be encouraging, even if through lack of knowledge on what a jerk this guy really is.

great lights directing children to work harder for their government.

I think you missed it, read the speech again. Don't quit school because that means quitting on your country is one example.

No One cares if the President talks to School Kids ONE School at a time. No big deal.

Its when the DEAR Leader invades the Lesson plans and the Secretary of Education sends out workbook like procedures to follow, that WE the American People Object.

Rason ? It violates the law...below...

20 U.S.C. § 3403. (Pub.L. 96-88, Title I, § 103, Oct. 17, 1979, 93 Stat. 670) United States Code Title 20. Education Chapter 48.

I’m sure she’s sincere and she’s still trying to be classy - unfortunately this crowd in the white house doesn’t deserve it.

Funny. Laura has been silent on all the other things Obama has done. Why speak up now?

Pretty strong statement there. Her observation that the lesson plans that were to go along with the speech were the objectionable part is correct too.

Any reference, however oblique to the cult of personality (i.e. Obama) rather than for the benefit of self, family and country would be enough to s***can the entire exercise.

We don't need no stinkin' Jugendbund, Mr Hussein, sir.
