After a summer of healthcare battles and sliding approval ratings for President Obama, the White House is facing a troubling new trend: The voters losing faith in the president are the ones he had worked hardest to attract.
New surveys show steep declines in Obama's approval ratings among whites -- including Democrats and independents -- who were crucial elements of the diverse coalition that helped elect the country's first black president.
Among white Democrats, Obamas job approval rating has dropped 11 points since his 100-days mark in April, according to surveys by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. It has dropped by 9 points among white independents and whites over 50, and by 12 points among white women -- all groups that will be targeted by both parties in next year's midterm elections.
"While Obama has a lock on African Americans, his support among white voters seems to be almost in a free fall," said veteran Republican pollster Neil Newhouse.

Blacks did not vote overwhelmingly for Obama because of his race. They voted overwhelmingly for Obama because they know Obama will pander to them more than McCain. When Republicans run black candidates blacks do not vote for them. They vote for the white democrat who’ll give them more “free” stuff.
If their support has eroded it is because of the failure of Zero to redistribute the wealth to the blacks as quickly as they thought he would do it.
That is exactly my reasoning in post 29.
Re: I’m a white guy who drives a BLACK car! That proves I am racist!
Actually. that proves you are an Oreo
Honestly, why should blacks vote Republican?
Democrats strongly support preferential hiring and racial quotas for blacks. How else would Michelle Obama get into Yale?
Republicans can’t give blacks that . .so of course they vote Democrat . . and always will.
Well, this is encouraging news.
Great point! And you’re right.
Oh, please.
Obama is losing the support of voters.
The majority of voters in America happen to be white.
So what.
Bingo!
Of course, most white people who voted for Obama did so because they have liberal beliefs. But a surprising number of self-described "conservatives" and Republicans did so as well; this is the "white guilt" factor of which you speak.
Now that they've ticked the "I'm not a racist" box by voting once for Obama, and bragged to their friends about it, many will feel free to migrate back to the conservative side of the ballot in 2010 and 2012.
A good model for this phenomenon here in North Carolina is a chap by the name of Harvey Gantt, who was, as the media reminded us ceaselessly, was the first black graduate of Clemson University in South Carolina. Gantt harvested a good deal of white guilt in 1982 -- running unusually strong in upper-income white precincts in addition to his near-unanimous support among blacks -- and was elected mayor of Charlotte. The "white guilt" wore off, however, when he ran for reelection in 1986. He went on to be twice nominated for the U.S. Senate, but was defeated both times by Jesse Helms.
Uh oh, Barack Obama is #8 on your list of Stuff White People Like.
If you get a customer based on price, you'll lose him to a lower price. If you get a customer based on service, you'll lose him to better service.
obama got his white voters by pretending to be color blind.
When he showed his racist colors, he lost that sale.
I'm a white guy who uses a black Sharpie pen! That PROVES I'm a racist, too!
:^)
Unfortunately Van Jones seems to be just the tip of the iceberg.
You are spot on. The election proved what is known but never admitted. A Black will always vote for another black without reason or exception. This is the original definition of racism.
Damn. Missed it.
But at least it gives as the reason Obama is on the list the fear that white people will be caused racist if they don't like him. And that fear, as pointed out above, has an expiration date.
I’m a white guy who is color blind but I’m sure I’m a racist.
WooHoo!
Oops, someone forgot to send the memo to Michael Steele!
