Does the citizen journalist model facilitate spreading vicious internet rumors?
Examiner.com ^ | Sept 6, 2009 | myself

"What is Examiner.com?

Launched in April 2008, Examiner.com is the insider source of everything local, offering a rich mix of hyper-local and globally relevant content. Examiner.com covers more than 100 major U.S. cities, thousands of towns and neighborhoods, and is developing a strong presence in international markets including Canada, the U.K., the Philippines and Australia. Website visitors are geo-targeted to their closest market, with over 18 million monthly unique visitors expected by the end of 2009.

"Examiner.com is a division of the Clarity Media Group, and is wholly owned by The Anschutz Company, one of the largest media investment companies in the world ...

What's an Examiner?

Examiner.com has the world's largest team of vetted and dedicated subject-matter writers, known as Examiners, who are credible, knowledgeable and passionate contributors from all walks of life. They are musicians, magazine writers, entrepreneurs, PhDs, college students, stay-at-home parents, seasoned journalists, retirees, etc.

Examiners create unique and original content to entertain, inform and inspire readers on thousands of subjects every day. Unlike most other online writing platforms, Examiner.com is not a blogging site; rather, our Examiners are local insiders and influencers who provide reliable intelligence and resources on local and category-specific topics.

Examiners are Independent Contractors, meaning they choose where, when and what to write about within their selected topic. Write from home, school or wherever inspiration strikes!"

TOPICS: Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: glennbeck; rumors
I was trying to research the origination of the vile Glenn Beck rumors and came across the Examiner.com.

I thought this was a regular on-line paper, but found out it was a new concept. It looks like they actively recruit citizen journaists, supposedly to report on local happenings, but evidently no one is watching the store.

The Clarity Media Group owns a few other papers and recently purchased "The Weekly Standard".

Phillip Anschultz, a conservative billionaire, holds the major interest in this group. He sounds like a good guy (owns or has interest in over 100 companies), but why does the Examiner.com continue to allow vile rumors to be printed? There is no basis what so ever for the Glenn Beck rumors except some obviously phony police report extracted from the infamous Duke rape case.

Who is vetting the citizen journalists and the stories they posts? Why hasn't the Examiner.com pulled this story?

This model looks seriously flawed to me.

“Who is vetting the citizen journalists and the stories they posts?”

That’s our job.

Through diligent, unbiased research.

And report all - both the positive and the negative.

(TRUTH).

[[Does the citizen journalist model facilitate spreading vicious internet rumors?]]

Meh, sure, and why not? Especially when the MAIN STREAM MEDIA has absolutely NO problem spreading vicious LIES about mainstream Americans and politicians and conservatives and everyone connected with moral fortitude

As of a few minutes ago, this vile rumor is still on their site.

I guess they think it's okay to repeat it as long as they use a “?” at the end.

What “vile rumors” r.e. Beck? I have not been in the loop.

What I’d like to see is videos, and well researched accounts, of Americans asking to see the books when it comes to spending tax monies on every level. Maybe Examiner.com would publish?

I hate to repeat the main rumor, but it is so ridiculous that I think it shows desperation.

So here it is the vile rumor:
Breaking: Glenn Beck guilty of rape and murder?

There is no name given for who was raped and murdered. You can't find anything concrete on the story except a doctored copied of the Duke rape case police report and a repeat over and over again of the rumor with absolutely no facts that can be traced.

They put the question mark at the end on most of the rumor sites. I guess that's supposed to protect them from a lawsuit or something.

I didn't want to go to any website with cooties(spyware and such). I was trying to find legitimate sites to explain the rumors and that's how I ran into the examiner story. But all you have to do is put in a goggle search for the inflammatory words and Glenn Beck and you will find many rumor sites. Just proceed with caution.

Hopefully, this one is so outrageous that misguided liberals might begin to wake up and see these people for who and what they are.

Sheesh. That’s a shade outlandish to say the least. Childish, actually, and desperate. My other take: I’d not heard this, but I won’t be listening to Beck any more. /s

I would strongly recommend to the folks at Examiner.com they make at least a cursory effort to vet the stories they allow for publication lest they open themselves up to liabilities attendant to defamation of character.

Where was this rumor published? And to answer your question, no, I don't believe the citizen journalist model contributes to the spread of vile internet rumors compared to anything else.

Van Jones resigns. The multi-leveled layers of editors at the MSM were still apparently trying to check the videos of Van Jones to decide whether the speaker was really Van Jones, then Van Jones resigned. They had zero news on this.

The vile rumors come out of the the leftwing blogs funded by leftwing billionaires like George Soros - MediaMatters, HuffPo, FireDogLake, DemocratUnderground, etc, etc, etc.

If someone abuses the posting privilege here, another poster can hit the abuse button and a moderator will decide. The moderators also check out messages for themselves. The Examiner site doesn't have an abuse button, at least I don't see one. On the Examiner site, the citizen journalists are evidently allowed a lot of latitude in what they say. How can repeating these vile rumors as possibly true (hence the question mark) with links to other sites news worthy?

Anyone putting out threads on the Glenn Beck rumors as fact are stopped on FreeRepublic.

The examiner still has this story on their web site.
