Northside, North East (Schools) to Scrap President's Speech. (I love San Antonio!)
WOAI ^ | 09/03/2009 | Jim Forsyth

Bexar County's (San Antonio,Tx.) two largest school districts said today they will not show President Obama's controversial 'address to students' in their schools, and will leave it up to parents whether the speech should be viewed by their kids, 1200 WOAI news reports.

The speech, which is set for 11AM CDT on Tuesday, has become controversial, because many conservative groups have said they are afraid the president will use the speech to try to convince children to support his political policies, and convince their parents to do the same.

"What North East ISD is going to do is tape the President's address and place it on our web site, where parents can access it and watch it at home if they so choose," North East's Deb Caldwell said.

Northside is adopting a similar policy, saying the district's web site will link to the speech and it will be up to parents whether to watch it or not.

At North East, Caldwell says the speech is set to occur during the start of the lunch period, which is a very hectic time of day and a time when many students aren't in their classrooms anyway, but she says there are no plans to show it in class at any time.

"We will have the link available for those parents who do want to show it to their students at home, but we don't plan to show it during the school day," Caldwell said.

Some parents have requested that schools which will show the speech allow their child to 'opt out.' Those districts say there will be no punishment for students who choose not to watch the speech, and for teachers who chose not to teach it.

Caldwell says North East parents should not consider keeping their kids home.

"If parents are thinking about keeping their students at home because they don't want them to see the address, that's not an issue in North East, because we won't be airing it," she said.

I emailed my child’s Superintendent this request about 90 minutes ago:

Much is being said - for and against - Barack Obama’s televised speech to be delivered nationwide to school students on September 8.

I’m not seeing any information about it at the NEISD website: http://www.neisd.net/

I believe your office should make a full and complete public statement as soon as possible regarding the District’s official position on this speech. Will you show this speech to our children? Will you require parental approval if you do? Will you allow students to opt-out?

Thank you.

So I checked the website again. Sure enough:

Message from superintendent about President’s address

Dear NEISD Parent/Guardian,

There has been quite a bit of media attention recently over President Obama’s address to school students on September 8, 2009. I am sending this message home to inform you about North East ISD’s position on this.

To avoid a disruption to the school day and loss of academic time, NEISD will provide the President’s address for families to watch at home if they so choose. The district will tape the speech and provide a link through the district’s Parent Portal.

The decision to record the speech and make it available on our Web site is for logistics and convenience purposes. I realize the highly-charged political environment is in the news, but quite frankly, many students will be at lunch, P.E. and other activities outside the classroom during the original broadcast.

Regardless of political party, adults should model respect for the office of the President of the United States.

Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Sincerely,

Richard A. Middleton
Superintendent of Schools

“teach it” ?
How the do you teach a political agenda speech?
Why would you teach a politicalagenda speech?
So long America thanks for all the freedom
Hello Socialist Democratic Republic of the United States.

“Regardless of political party, adults should model respect for the office of the President of the United States.”

When we have a President that has respect for the United States, then we will respect that man or women.

This has pretty much been the lead off noon story on WOAI Radio, KSAT12 and KENS5. If I can help more, let me know.

Exactly right.

Look at my e-mail again in post 5. I DELIBERATLEY failed to address Dear Leader as “President Obama”. (ugh - i hate even typing that!)

I was respectful and called him by his name. Heck, I even left out his HUSSEIN name!

But I will NOT address Nobama as “President”.

Our school district here in ohio is giving the kids the option to watch. I may have my son not attend that day just because. He is definitely not an Obambi fan. My daughters Catholic school in the same district and they said absolutely no way are we showing the propoganda speech....

When he earns My respect, I'll give it to him ten fold.

What a refreshingly smart compromise. It's shameful that Barack Obama put educators across the country in such a sticky position. Add up all the time school administrators from coast to coast have had to devote to handling this controversy & the $/hr cost would have purchased hundreds of thousands of books for kids.

So much for the WH's latest exercise in idiocy being "for the children". Once again, it's all about Obama's ego, it seems - and damn the consequences to everybody else.

I cannot even pronounce his name without my throat closing down. At home and among friends, I call him zerO and I will not use his fraudulently gained title in conjunction with even that name.

The first highpoint of my weekday is to go to Rassmussan and see how low his approval is. The second is to watch Beck.
