Childhood Obesity Report Calls For Government Regulations to Limit Access to Unhealthy Restaurant Chains Wednesday, September 02, 2009 By Penny Starr, Senior Staff Writer
(CNSNews.com) - A newly released report by the Institute for Medicine and the National Research Council details strategies for local governments to combat what it calls an epidemic of childhood obesity, including enacting zoning and land-use regulations that would restrict fast food establishments near school grounds and public playgrounds.
The report, Local Government Actions to Prevent Childhood Obesity, was compiled by the Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention Actions for Local Governments, a committee of health care professionals, academics, and policy makers. The report offers nine action strategies for healthy eating and three actions for increasing physical activities.
The report, unveiled at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington on Tuesday, also advises local governments to impose higher taxes to discourage consumption of foods and beverages that have minimal nutritional value and to mandate that chain restaurants (those with 20 or more stores) provide caloric information on menus.
When asked by CNSNews.com if regulating where restaurants can be built could harm communities by taking away jobs, committee members said the report presents options and that studies show that fast food restaurants are disproportionately located in low-income and minority neighborhoods.

A precis.
You are all stupid. You do not know how to look after yourselves, therefore we need to do it for you.
Who’s paying the salaries of folks employed by the Institute for Medicine and the National Research Council?

Right off the bat, I know three children who are obese. All three have siblings who are average weight. All three eat the same kinds and amounts of food as their brothers and sisters. The three children have similar excercise regimens. In these children, something else is going on, and I suspect the same for a lot of other children. Putting them on a strict diet might make them thin, but it is also unhealthy.
How about limiting access to ‘unhealthy people’ like gays and lesbians?
That stuff is not cheap these days.
The people are fat and have no money seems like a direct correlation to me.
In our town, the McDonald's was already located across the road from the high school and elementary school. A lot of the minority high school kids are able to walk to work at McD's before or after school -- and there are very few other potential work sites around in walking distance.
Maybe that's because poor people can't afford to eat dinner at Ruth's Chris or Benihana.
The answer is simple. Just say NO.
Hell no.
No, as in - you put your sorry liberal but in this place and we’ll kick you in your Obama.
We simply do not have to take this. Period.
Agricultural subsidies at work: healthy food is expensive, crap is cheap. End the subsidies and let the market work. Sadly, BOTH “parties” in our (ahem) “two”-party system slop at the ag lobby trough...
Butt, not but.
Actually, I should have also said Obama, since that is my new synonym for butt, *sshole, and the stuff that comes out of it,
That doesn't mean they aren't grabbing extra food elsewhere. And I've never seen a family with a bunch of kids where they all participate in the same activities or physical fitness regiment. My older brother was a fat slob because he never did anything but sit around the house and watch tv and sneak food, while I was a skinny malnourished looking kid because I never stood still and never ate all my dinners.
Yet we can have “adult entertainment” with their flashy signs and silhouettes of nude women within yards of an elementary school and its ok.
We can have radical indoctrination within our schools and its ok.
We can have ‘mandatory’ vaccinations of our youth and its ok.
Our kids are being forced to learn about muslims and Allah but not Christianity in the public schools, and this is ok.
Pedeophiles live in neighborhoods filled with kids but that’s okay because they have to have some place to live.
But God help us if there is a freaking Burger King or McDonalds next to a school because we know its THEIR fault America’s overweight. No,it’s not personal responsibility that made us obese. It has nothing to do with personal choice. Don’t you know the burger King (scary dude that he is), holds us down and forces us to eat those burgers and fries? Ever wonder what submliminal messages you get from the golden arches? How dare they operate within a school zone. They should be closed down for their unconstitutional, capitalist behavior. [*sarc*]
oh, enough with the ranting. I have to get an egg mcmuffin.
Ever since Congress mandated that Corn Syrup be used instead of Cane Sugar; obesity and diabetes has skyrocketed. This was done to create a higher demand for corn, without being thoroughly researched as to how it would affect our diets.
Make some homemade ice cream with real sugar; after a serving you will feel good - but your body will tell you that if you eat too much, you will vomit and feel lousy all day.
Now, open up some store-bought ice cream sweetened with Corn Syrup. Eat all you can, you may get full; but your body doesn’t know how to deal with Corn Syrup - you won’t get the “if you eat more, you will vomit” response.
Remember when soda was sweetened with sugar? Drink 2+ cokes and you were going to be sick. Today, we drink 6+ cans a day with no ill-feelings.
IMHO, Corn Syrup and Congress are to blame.
I’m all for that, end all farm subsidies, and make everyone pay what it really costs farmers to produce food.
Imagine the whining then... By members of both parties, as e see now, except they blame rising food prices on ethanol production, which is the furthest thing from the truth, but it’s easier and most convenient because it requires little thinking.
Huh? I can grab 3 double-cheeseburgers, fries and a coke for $5 at any McDonalds. A $5 meal is cheap.
And some people just eat what they want and it never turns into fat. I recall a friend in high school (who now works in NORAD) who would sit across from me every day in the cafeteria after eating his lunch with five or six ice cream sandwiches and eat them all. He was in no sports. He never worked out. Some people are just blessed that way.
Oh, those elephant ears and cotton candy.....
Leni
Dropped about 23 pounds. No other changes of any kind.
I am seeing bread now being advertised as not having it in it.
