Woman didn't smell like alcohol, but car smelled like hamburger

CRESTVIEW – A woman was arrested after parking her car toward the end of the Whataburger drive-through lane in Crestview and passing out over a half-eaten burger.

Machelle Coleman, 33, of Crestview, was found slumped over her steering wheel by a Crestview Police Department deputy. She had a half-eaten burger on her left leg and lettuce and French fries were strewn across her lap, according to the deputy.

After unsuccessfully attempting to awaken Coleman, the deputy called EMS. A few minutes later, Coleman woke up and began mumbling incoherently. Her eyes were watery and bloodshot. But the deputy did not smell alcohol in the car. Rather, the entire car smelled like a hamburger and fries, according to the incident report.

The deputy confirmed that Coleman did not have any medical issues and asked her if anyone had been in the car with her. “Ya, my man,” Coleman said and looked at the passenger seat. The passenger seat was empty when the deputy arrived on scene.

Coleman then began eating her burger, which she retrieved from her leg. She told the deputy that she had been drinking gin at Helen Back earlier that night with her “man.”

EMS arrived and evaluated Coleman. During this time, a witness to the incident told the Crestview Police Department deputy that Coleman had driven through the Whataburger drive-thru alone, moved her car to the end of the lane and passed out, according to the report.

After EMS had evaluated Coleman, the deputy noted that Coleman was swaying and had trouble maintaining her balance. He requested that she complete field sobriety exercises. Instead, the report said Coleman stated she had to urinate and walked toward the Whataburger restroom.

A female deputy escorted Coleman from the women’s restroom and she was asked again to complete field sobriety exercises.

Coleman told the deputy that those exercises are “just used to make people look guilty” and crossed her arms.

On route to the Okaloosa County Jail, Coleman began crying and arguing with the deputy about why she was arrested, the report said.

Upon arrival, Coleman refused to provide any breath samples, which were requested by officers during a 20-minute observation period.

Coleman was booked into jail and charged with DUI – fifth offense within ten years, the report said.

5 in 10 years. Just the kind of person who kills someone with her car. And then MADD comes out and uses the fatality to assault people who don’t cause accidents.

In the 70’s I was going hunting in Arizona with a fellow Airman. We were heading out the beeline highway at about 4 in the morning when a very nice looking young girl stepped into the roadway in the middle of the desert. We were both carrying so we were not worried about a hijack. She was obviously drunk and was looking for a party. This young lady was 20 miles from anywhere with no obvious means of transportation and blind staggering drunk. We called the Sheriff and they arrived to take her home. How she got there is still a mystery.

Ohhhh how right you are.

MADD’s effectiveness is akin to blowing up your house to get rid of cockroaches.

I hate it when that happens.

If you hamburger don't drive. If you drive don't hamburger.

She passed out behind the wheel before she could get out of the drive-thru.

If the cops think you might have driven drunk, you'll be arrested for DUI. They don't have to actually catch you doing it. You can't even "sleep it off" in your PARKED car without potentially being charged.

You can be charged with DUI just for being in your car while drunk, it’s happened. That’s stupid. However, witnesses told police she had been driving - read where it talks about her going through the drive through before she passed out.

A rather typical Crestview arrest report. Crestview is the capital of the Redneck Riviera (Niceville, Pace, and Pensacola have been making strides to assume the title of Redneck Capital, but Crestview continues to outperform them in all things Redneck).

“You can be charged with DUI just for being in your car while drunk, it’s happened.”

Yikes! Granted, this woman was likely drunk, but the police shouldn’t be able to arrest someone for sleeping while intoxicated. That’s not good.

In most cases I agree with you. In this particular one, she had been driving shortly before and it’s not likely she got drunk in the time between when she stopped and when the cops arrived.

Also Crestview is not that far from me so hopefully they lock her up for a good long time.

It sounds like she’s been through this before - I agree she doesn’t belong on the street!

I know a guy who got a DUI after returning home from work, sober, going inside and getting a beer and then sitting in his car in the drive way to drink that beer. He worked second shift and liked to wind down with a beer listening to some hard rock, he did so in his car so he wouldn’t wake his children.

Yes, parked in his driveway (private property) was enough to get him nabbed....

Here in MA, if the keys are in the ignition, you're driving. If you have to take a nap, throw the keys on the floor mat.
