The Long-Distance Runner (Be afraid, be very afraid for 2012)

Posted on 08/30/2009 10:25:41 AM PDT by Replace all Democrats

Just before Thanksgiving last year, a group of former aides to Mitt Romney convened at his salmon-colored Belmont home, many of them gathering for the first time since Romney had disbanded his presidential campaign some nine months before. Romney had invited them for a post-mortem of the election weeks earlier, the type of dispassionate assessment that the Harvard Business School alumnus so enjoyed. But over cookies, they found few of the metrics for success that Romney prized -- Republicans had been decisively thumped at all levels -- and his attention shifted from 2008 to the future.

Millions of us will work tirelessly to stop anything like that from happening. We Conservatives are pro action and we will never be faced with that scenario.

One question for Jeb, “Are you or are you not for amnesty for illegals and will you close and SECURE both of our borders"? Any wrong answer is grounds for dismissal from consideration.

AMEN!! I didn’t want McCain to be President, BUT I voted for him because SARAH came with the package and I wanted HER!!!There are many here who couldn’t stand to even vote for the package because he wasn’t pure enough. We would be sooooooo much better had McCAin and SARAH won....but they came as a package, remember?????

Yes, but I would not vote for him again... even if Sarah ran with him again... which would show to me that her judgment would be flawed... but there is no chance that she would ever run with him again and she has said that no one will ever keep her from speaking her mind as “her mind”.

Purist schmurist Ann.

All most of us want is someone we can trust is not big government RINO con artist. AKA NOT Romney, or a Bush for that matter.

I think you purists really want the Republicans creamed by the Democrats for decades and decades.

Woah.

Since when is fieldmarshaldj a "purist"?

*blinks*

AA, I have great respect for you as a '97 Freeper, but this charge against fieldmarshaldj is most unbecoming of someone like you. It's like a low blow, a last resort because you have no rational or credible argument as to why we as Freepers should back Romney.

In any case, unlike Calvin Coolidge--the last governor of Mass. who served as President, and, aside from Reagan, the last genuine conservatarian to maintain that office--Romney is not actually a conservative, and that's a good enough reason for me to refuse to support his candidacy, should he choose to run again in 2012.

I failed to mention, having big government RINOs in charge of the party is exactly what gets us “creamed”. See 2006 and 2008.

That’s when voters rejected the GOP because they were too conservative? No, it’s when conservative voters stopped seeing the difference between R and D because of President Bush and GOP congressional leaders outright abandonment of the idea of smaller government.

I’ll reiterate my critique of your silly talking point term “purist” since you used it more than once.

Having a standard for a Presidential candidate doesn’t make you a ‘purist’. Romney is a proven lousy Governor. And to this day he defends the unacceptable and massive failure that is Romneycare. (The failure of which is reason enough to decry Obamacare.) We must take great care in selecting our Presidents, considering how the last one screwed us. If Romney runs America like ran his state he will make the Bushes look like a picnic.

Rather than play gotcha games with “If Romney was the nominee would you vote for him” you should be helping ensure that no one has to make that unpleasant decision.

A RINO President is better than a democrat? The one tends to lead to the other. Bush SR. begat Clinton. Bush JR. begat Obama. No RINO President has left the county or the Republican party better than he found it. We desperately need a decent to good President.

You are THICK! I said if there was a CHOICE between a LIBERAL like OBama and a RINO like Romney, I'd go for Romney to STOP the CRAP that is going on with LIBERAL DEMOCRATS in charge!!!!!!

I would NEVER vote for a RINO IF THERE WAS A CHOICE between a Conservative and a LIBERAL!!

The PURISTS that say they will NEVER support a RINO EVER is CHILDISH and is what has got us into some of this mess.

I voted for McCain because I wanted SARAH! I didn't stay home and sit on my hands because McCain was a RINO.

We need to have CLOSED PRIMARIES so we don't end up with RINOS.

What “crap” in your estimation would Slick Willard stop ? Especially given that he supports EVERY liberal/Socialist policy ever set in front of him. Well ? You need to go study up on his record as MA Governor. I’ve known him FIFTEEN years. He was the DREAM Governor for the Liberal Democrats in MA. He not only SIGNED everything they enacted, he MURDERED and BURIED the MA GOP because of it, and he didn’t give a DAMN.

So, again, what exactly do you think Slick Willard would’ve done to stop “Democrat crap” when he is in FAVOR of all their crap ? What would he have done for the Republican party as President ? For Conservatism ? Zero does more for the Republican and Conservative cause by his Stalinist insanity than Slick Willard does, and he might very well deliver us back our lost majority. Slick Willard would’ve reduced us to 1/3rd of Congress and even fewer Governorships and legislatures in 2010 by splitting the GOP and EMPOWERING the Democrats. Why do you have such a problem understanding and grappling with that ? It’s in the record !

Yes, he is. Because he doesn’t lie to the people of Massachusetts that he’s a Republican. You’d apparently support Bill Clinton or Zero if they declared themself a Republican tomorrow, no matter what their record is.

You should thank Slick Willard. He elected Deval Patrick. He made the state completely and thoroughly safe for the Democrat party. But if you think I’m happy or supportive of Socialists of either party, you’re delusional. Have you ever heard of a concept called “Conservatism” ? It’s what I support. Conservatism doesn’t consist of unapologetically supporting Socialist RINOs. Why don’t you oppose Socialist RINOs that aid absolutely the liberal Democrat cause and inflict maximum damage to Conservatism and the Republican party ? Why ?

I'd go for Romney to STOP the CRAP that is going on with LIBERAL DEMOCRATS in charge!!!!!!

At the end of the day, both a liberal Republican (otherwise known as a "RINO") and a liberal Democrat are both still liberals.

The only difference is that one is milder than the other.

You're not stopping anything. You're only procrastinating having to deal with the leftists who want to transform this Republic into a Socialist Republic.

The PURISTS that say they will NEVER support a RINO EVER is CHILDISH and is what has got us into some of this mess.

Why the hell should I support a RINO?

I am not beholden to the Republican Party.

In 2004, the first election I was eligible to vote in, I was a registered member of the Republican Party in Loudoun County, Virginia, and I voted for the stinking RINO Bush.

And look what I got.

Amnesty. TARP. Cap and tax. Ramos and Compean. Two endless interventionist wars. Oh, and, the pièce_de_résistance: Obama.

I am no longer a member of the Republican Party, registered or otherwise. I am, however, still a conservative, and while I will be happy to support Republican candidates who are in fact genuine conservatarians, I will not automatically bend over for any more of the damn RINOs...simply because you and various assorted brainless GOP sheep bleat that I should do so.

So, no, the so-called "purists" are not to blame. Stupid RINOs that steered the Republican Party away from its guiding principles and into the Socialist darkness are to blame for the present status of the Republican Party.

I voted for McCain because I wanted SARAH!

That still doesn't change the fact that you voted for McCain.
