I haven't seen this posted as an idea, and think that it's a great time to propose this what with the healthcare debate, Rangel, et al. The American people are furious that congress would exempt itself from the healthcare laws that they pass for us. Rangel has dodged the tax laws without penalty, which we would never be able to do. A grass roots effort to enlist the help of a senator or rep would get the ball rolling. The idea just hit me and I am wondering what the (wise) others think.

This is a great idea. Don’t expect Congress to pay any attention to it.

I suspect that a constitutional amendment would be necessary. Good idea, in cany case.

I understand the concept, but it doesn’t make any sense. For example, with the KennedyKare bill, they will simply add language that says “Any health plan offered to members of Congress shall be deemed to be in compliance with this section.” They are already ‘subject’ to the laws they pass, they just create there own loopholes.

I believe that there is also a Constitutional requirement that the President be “natural born”, but that doesn’t seem to have made any difference. We have a kenyan dictator sitting in the Oval Office surrounded by his “Czars” and wiping his butt with the Constitution.

A strict reading of the constitution would reveal
that these actions are already unconstitutional.
So an additional amendment would only restate
what is already there.

How naive .

Constitutional amendment would be a tough one — but if the RNC gets smart, it will cement this into the party platform for the next two elections.

This should be law now, and I support it, and I bet a large portion of America would, democrats, independents and republicans...

Rush Limbaugh used to regularly feature laws that Congress is exempt from in his show, so it would be surprising not to have seen this idea floated. That is, other than the fact that it has very little chance of actually taking place. “Lurking since 2000” — That’s a long time. Welcome to FR.
