Cops: Jaycee Lee Dugard Hidden for 18 Years, Bore Abductor's Two Kids

She was only 11 when they took her in 1991, a 4-foot, 6-inch fifth-grader walking to school in El Dorado County in a pink windbreaker and pink stretch pants.

For 18 years, police say, the convicted rapist and his wife kept Jaycee Lee Dugard hidden in their Antioch backyard, living in a tent or shed away from the legions of law officers searching for her. Over the years, authorities say, her abductor -- 58-year-old Phillip Craig Garrido -- impregnated her twice and she gave birth to two girls, now 15 and 11.

This is the horrifying ordeal law enforcement officials described today after revealing that Dugard, now 29, had been found safe after all these years and reunited with her mother this morning.

"She was in good health, but living in a backyard for 18 years does take its toll," said El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar.

The apparent end to a case that sparked national headlines began with a suspicious campus police officer at University of California, Berkeley on Tuesday. Authorities said the officer spotted Garrido with two young children on campus, where Garrido apparently had gone to distribute religious-themed literature, a frequent hobby of his. Upon questioning, the officer discovered Garrido was a parolee and contacted his parole agent.

Apparently, this “compound” was well hidden. You could not even see it. It was a backyard within a back yard. You can only see it from the air apparently.

Of all medieval punishments, breaking on the wheel was supposed to be the worst. The convict was tied firmly to a wagon wheel on an axle. He received a thorough beating with iron crowbars to break every major bone in his body, and then the wheel was spun until he died. The fractured ends of the bones would continually grind against each other, causing incessant agonizing pain for the several days it took to die. The Russian czars used this one freely on their subjects.

ALL, I am sickened and disgusted by all the so-called conservatives ,self-labeled freepers and others who are vying to devise ever more vile tortures and means of abuse and extended, excruciating means of executing the kidnapper/rapist.It has even been proposed we should have spared and kept a mass murderer captive solely to gruesomely execute sex offenders.Ever hear of "a cure worse than the disease"?

Have any of you spent even a portion of that hatred towards those who MURDER ,practically routinely,in this nation and elsewhere, yet are as routinely paroled? An estimated 20,000 paroled KILLERS walk the streets and where is your outrage? DEATH is permanent,a fate which this girl was spared.Or are all you willing to propose your barbaric tortures upon the thousands of abortion doctors who kill a MILLION babies a year? But ONLY this particular kidnapping and rape spurs you to invective and violent fantasies, which you utter from behind the safety of your keyboards?

If you don't like the laws and the punishment meted out to kidnappers and other criminals then ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING to CHANGE the SYSTEM: WORK to have the laws changed, campaign against politicians who are soft on criminals,VOTE in every election after carefully considering the candidates. And keep in mind that there are about a BILLION adherents of a system which wouldn't find this kidnapper/rapist all that disturbing,so better hope they don't take over here.

When and if the courts find any criminal deserving of the death penalty it ought to be done by a means that is quick and doesn't constitute entertainment for the sick minds who revel in seeing ANYONE tortured.

"Wow, and the step-father had to live with the cloud of doubt from people for eightteen years."

Well, at least he KNEW he was innocent...of course that was small consolation.

But the little girl now a woman,
Words can't express the sorrow I have for the hell she went through for 18 years and her children...it's just unfathomable...

Our country and our world is just a sea of hell and Satan is sailing right along...

Fox reported this morning that neighbors had informed police that something was wrong in the back yard and that they had seen children, or words to that effect. The police said there was nothing they could do. Possibly but some IR scoping seems in order here. A little night work might have figured this out.

The problem with the Bill of Rights and other such laws is that in order for the Rights of anyone to be upheld, they must be upheld for all. So even if you don't like your neighbor, and suspect he is up to no good, any search should require a court order,i.e. a warrant describing the place to be searched and the thing or person to be searched for.Now if you don't mind having any official or police officer being able to peek through your windows or enter your property on a whim, then perhaps this constitutional republic is not where you want to live.

Police, when told of the sounds of children playing in the backyard of a convicted sex offender, should have consulted with the parole officer and a judge, and been easily able to get a search warrant. No need for "extra-legal" snooping.

You make some good points and perhaps I let my passion run away a bit. However, to be clear I never advocated a public display of the torture. In no way would I want to feed into that dark part of our society. I did advocate a forced viewing by convicted sex offenders to obtain some deterrence affect. Also, another real problem with my proposed punishment is who would actually deal out such a punishment. Anyone who would want to, shouldn’t. And dealing out such a punishment would damage anyone who wouldn’t want to do it. But passion and fantasy can ignore real world problems.

Just because I did not mention capital punishment for murderers does not mean I am not outraged by the unpunished killers in our midst. Anyone who intentionally murders someone should be executed. Especially if their victim was a child, elderly, weak or trusted the murderer. Your bringing in the abortion doctors into the argument is unfair as well. Our law says abortion is legal. My passion needs to be directed at changing that law first.

But I like your compromise. I will gladly accept a certain, swift capital punishment for those crimes society considers vile. And I would advocate kidnapping as one of those crimes (and I am not including child custody fight type offenses in that category).

About 30 years ago I had a 10 minute conversation with a man whose 6 year old daughter had disappeared about 10 years earlier. Hearing about the pain, depression, family destruction, not knowing, etc. just shook me to the core. The guy was still looking for her. He was bordering on maddness. Just walking in his shoes for those 10 minutes changed me. Anytime I imagine any of the children of family or friends being taken by someone, I just get sick to my stomach. So many potentially great lives are forever impacted by the evil acts of one or two people.

Someone on one of these threads pointed out that crimes like this were Capital Crimes until the 60’s. Now only murder is.

Neighbors told The Bee today that they had called police about two years ago to report that there were tents on Garrido's property and children at the home. They knew Garrido was a sex offender required to register on the state's Megan's Law Web site. However, they said nothing ever came of the call.

Maybe the Justice Department could investigate some incompetent police instead of wasting time investigating CIA agents.

Just a thought.

I took my best shot but I don't think I was nearly imaginative enough with the punishment.

There is no punishment that can be conceived of by man that would bring justice in this case. Even drawing and quartering would be grossly insufficient.

These are dangerous, rabid animals and should be treated as such. Don't try to punish them. Don't try to extract justice. Just remove them from this Earth as quickly as possible.

Take them out back, shoot them, burn the remains, and bury their ashes with with equal measures of lye in a landfill somewhere.

The victim and her children (who are also victims of these animals) will spend the rest of their lives trying to recover from what was done to them. They deserve the right to do so without worrying that the animals that did this to them may get out someday and do it again.

How come the parole agency didn't even know that he lived on a two-acre property?? That to me is unbelievable. You would think a casual observer would notice the huge size of the lots merely by standing outside.

They performed a complete inspection in the house some time ago and glanced out the back window to see a very small yard with a fence. These are apparently not the sharpest knives in the drawer!

Does anyone have any information on the young boy who was found in MO. Awhile back after he had been kept. I just wondered how his recovery is going. Denco

Additionally, they could have retrieved a Google Map of the property and seen the tents in the large backyard where these girls were kept for so many years. I was able to do this in one minute’s time.

Apparently he was one of the only ones. According to Fox News he was visited periodically by the police/parole officers as part of his status as a registered sex offender. They even searched the house and yard. When all this is said and done I hope some parole officers get burned for incompetence. I guess there are searches and then there are “searches”

As I posted above, they didn’t even have a clue as to the basic size of his property. That to me is just gross negligence.

California’s finest!! They may as well cut the entire probation department for all the good they are.
