Patrick to support change to succession law @ 1:02 pm by Hill Staff

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) further fired up the political chattering class Wednesday morning when he told a local radio station he would approve a plan to appoint an interim successor to the late-Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) until a special election could be held.

"Massachusetts needs two voices," Patrick said during an interview with WBUR-FM radio, which was later picked up by The Associated Press.

Currently, Massachusetts requires a special election to be held between 145 and 160 days after a Senate seat becomes vacant. The law was first enacted in 2004 by Democrats who wanted to prevent then-Gov. Mitt Romney (R) from appointing a successor to Sen. John Kerry (D), should he have won the presidential election.

Although Kennedy himself first pitched the idea in a letter to state lawmakers last week, his efforts failed to cull significant political support. Democrats, including Patrick, remained silent on the proposed revision, while Republicans excoriated Kennedy for using the succession rule to advance a partisan agenda.

Despite Patrick's now-vocal support, it remains unclear whether the revision will clear the state legislature. Among other obstacles, the governor's approval ratings have reached record lows, and some lawmakers seem fearful of extending the Kennedy dynasty, even if by proxy.

Who will he appoint? An oil baron Joe or a druggie Patrick?
It must be a Kennedy, after all.

This is a poorly written article. If you “cull” political support, you actually remove it. You want to “garner” political support.

Laws Democrats pass themselves don’t even apply to Democrats!!

We must fight this, and point out the utter hypocrisy of the Democrats.

Why the hell even go through the motions of voting on an 'edict' from the Kennedy's? Why not just trot one of them up to the Senate floor and announce succession!

The law was changed because of Kerry/Romney potential and now they want to go back to the old way when it benefits them.

Andyet, this state still votes for anything named Kennedy or who has a predilection for buggering.

And they fail to mention, that until 2004, the governor of Mass. would appoint a replacement if a Senate seat was vacant between elections.

That law was changed because, in ‘04, Mass. had a Republican governor, Mitt Romney, and they didn’t want him to appoint a successor if John Kerry had been elected president that year.

Geez, Ted’s been dead less than 24 hours and already partisan Democrats are taking about this issue??????

Kennedy wanted his wife to be appointed, and for her to run in the next election while using her married name.

So what's the problem? That law is clearly out of date and is obviously not needed any more...

...I mean, after all, the current governor is a democrat. And if a rebublican or "other" ever becomes governor again, they can always re-enact it.

The article did not fail to mention that fact. It is in the 4th paragraph.
