The whole idea of a National Day of Service on Sept. 11, whether voluntary or not and regardless of who is promoting the idea, ought to make advocates of limited government jittery. I mean, aren't taxes, by which the productive subsidize the nonproductive, enough? How much more service to the government is needed? Where does it end? It reminds me of something that Michelle Obama, in her unintentional imitation of Evita Peron last year, said.
Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you…move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed. It turns out the First Lady might have meant it. This all reminds me of the Reich Labor Service, a program instituted to help "green" the Third Reich. The members of the Reich Labor Service appeared prominently in the classic Nazi propaganda film, Triumph of the Will, (I had to watch it in college) bearing shovels in place of rifles.

I agree with you. I don't think it has dawned on them yet. They appear to believe that they will be immune to the coming unpleasantness, but I'm sure that they also secretly hope that they will somehow benefit and profit thereby. They may be in for a very rude awakening.

I think most of us work all day Monday and at least half of Tuesday just to pay our taxes, some more and less than that, of course.

If all the hidden costs of complying with the mountain of business regulations passed on to consumers are considered it probably works out to more like 8 AM Monday through 3 PM Thursday.
What's the difference in the US? The only thing our elected officials, military, public employees are asked, not to serve, but to defend, is The Constitution of The United States.
The 50%+ of Americans who pay no taxes are as free as a bird. That includes government workers, none of whom pay any taxes, because they are paid by taxes. It’s only productive private company employees who are slaves of the State. The political class, the deadbeats, the freeloaders, and the bureaucrats are our masters.

On Friday, September 11th, I will say a little prayer to remember those who died, their survivors, and the patriotic way that America reacted. Depending on the weather, I will be out in my garden and fledgling orchard doing useful work. I am of a certain age, and my orchard may not do much for me except provide satisfaction and a modicum of fruit and nuts, but it will be there for some other Americans who will not have to wait for the fruit and nut trees to mature. If the weather is not so good, I’ll do something else, but it will not be anything that the current POTUS or WOPOTUS(wife of POTUS) can take any credit for or any pleasure in. I’ll guarantee you that. Obama and his wife have no claim whatsoever to any of my time, talent, or goods beyond what the law allows the government to take already. I wouldn’t do anything on September 11th which would give these Chicagoans the suggestion that I care one bit about anything they might want, say or suggest. The best community service anyone can perform is anything which will get the democrats out of the control of the house and senate next year, and “That One and that other one” out of the White house two years later.
