We have also had entire societies based on the idea that cruelty is a good thing. The Romans and Aztecs spring to mind.

"The liberty of the America Revolution is actually based more directly on Christian theology, which states that all men are children of God and therefore in some ultimate sense equal."

I think it was based on both. They started with your premise, then asked themselves, "How are we going to get there". It's the "How are we going to get there?" part that they turned to the writings and musings of Greek philosophers and especially on Roman politicians, like Cicero. They relied on Christian principles to define their goals and principles, and classical thinkers to help design the mechanism that would satisfy those goals and principles.

While one hates to generalize, I think it's fair to say that Asia, and most of the cultures contained therein, gave much more weight to military strategists that spoke to conquering enemies, controlling populations and building wealth through acquisition rather than through multiplication.

Oh, I agree. Western civilization and specifically the idea of human rights, is a hybrid of classical and Hebraic civilization. This is more than a little weird, as the two aren’t really compatible. The Romans could get along with just about anybody, but not with the Jews.

One theory about the unusually long vitality of western civ, going on 1000 years now, is that this hybrid nature provides a type of “hybrid vitality.” The internal struggle within the society keeping things from stagnating as tends to happen with a less diverse society.

We may be seeing the end of western civ approaching, but then people have been saying that for 500 years or more. Which doesn’t mean it can’t be right this time.

Not that if forces cruelty, but cultures that elevate community over individuality tend to value individual life much less and value tribal unity much more.

To those of us who do value life and liberty, it certainly appears that the cultures are cruel and sickening. We would like to think that, even in war, we would value the individual lives of our enemies, and not use 2-year-olds as target practice.

But to communal cultures, the idea of caring about the lives of people who are in another tribe, or a different culture, is almost foreign, and killing other tribes, brutally and sadistically torturing and raping those in other groups, seems no more of an ethical concern than swatting a fly.

I doubt you need much exercise because you seem to get plenty of exercise by jumping to conclusions.

The point many posters made to you is one you continue to avoid. Europeans are in a class by themselves when it comes to killing others. Marxism, a product of European culture, is in a league of its own. NAZI's outpaced the Japanese when it came to murder. It's possible you get more exercise than me, maybe. But, you are lazy with you mind.

Maybe because that completely misses MY point which is the one we were discussing. I tried to explain by talking about the HONOR or suicide and the forced abortions. I just wonder if it has something to do with the thinking of the whole rather than the individual.

Your line about being lazy with my mind is quite funny if you knew me, which of course you don't. Jumping to conclusions again.

I'm really so done with this topic. It was an off-handed comment after reading about a group of military men who used a 2 month old for target practice. Can you imagine our troops doing that? Any troops in Europe doing that?

Maybe Africa or Arabs, but not others. Our people who have a cow if our troops did that.

In any case I'm done arguing about it. It just wasn't a philosophical Maxim I was spouting. It was just an off-handed comment.

I agree with you that cruel acts against other humans is certainly not limited to Asian cultures, but for someone to have made an observation about a particular group of related cultures is not racism by any stretch. People need to be more careful about bandying that accusation around. It has become the knee-jerk response anytime someone makes an observation about any culture whose members are a minority in this country, and it just makes the person using it look stupid and vindictive.

Members of minority cultures are all hot and heavy about preserving their cultural differences which they tout as good for America because of “diversity”. Then, when some aspect of that culture is criticized, they cry “racism!” So, their choices are to assimilate and adopt American culture as their own, or preserve their culture and be prepared for observations about some undesirable differences their culture presents. I would go so far as to suggest that forcing acceptance of the undesirable aspects of those cultures on the mainstream “host” culture leads to exactly the tribalism animosity that is the root cause of what this thread is about in the first place.

When in Rome.........

As for the 40 million aborted babies over the last thirty-six years, it is indeed a holacaust. But in the context of this discussion it’s apples and oranges, off topic, and looks like a grasp at straws. But since you raised abortion in connection with cruelty, let’s talk about abortion in China, the largest of all Asian cultures. Since the Chinese usually only allow one child per family (sometimes two for rural families if the first-born is a girl) and that’s been going on for thirty years, and given that China has about four times our population, the number of forced abortions and “avoided” births through forced sterilization is over 300 million, nearly 10 times the number of abortions in the U.S. where there is no forced sterilization. Further, in the U.S., half or fewer than half the population support abortion. There is a strong voice here speaking vociferously against it, but there is no such voice in China because the government shoots such people on sight or imprisons them for life, which is indeed cruel.

“Then, when some aspect of that culture is criticized, they cry “racism!” “

It wasn’t “some aspect” it was “Asians” so take your long winded personal attacks and take a hike.

Any troops in Europe doing that?

Yes.

Try looking at what some of the European UN "Peacekeeper" troops get up to.

Webb is a Rat. I wonder if he dared to speak out against the brutality that preceded his visit or did the zero tell him not to make any waves.

Gotcha! Ad hominem is always the last bastion of cover for the person with no valid argument. Your response is what I would expect from the left!

:)

hahahahahaha!

“Ad hominem is always the last bastion of cover for the person with no valid argument.”

yes that pretty much sums up your long winded post.

But comparing my arguments of the left, the new Godwins law. Comparing a statement that “asians” have a unique lock on cruelty to what the left says is infantile.
