Ink found in Jurassic-era squid (150 mya squid "can be dissected as if they are living animals")
BBC ^ | August 19,2009

Posted on 08/19/2009 9:40:47 AM PDT by GodGunsGuts

Palaeontologists have drawn with ink extracted from a preserved fossilised squid uncovered during a dig in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

The fossil, thought to be 150 million years old, was found when a rock was cracked open, revealing the one-inch-long black ink sac.

A picture of the creature and its Latin name was drawn using its ink...

“So, it’s not really ink anymore. I’m not understanding how this can be reconstituted”

The article doesn’t say - but I suppose it doesn’t degrade or dissolve in the manner tissue does - so it remained in place until a suitable solvent dislodged it from the fossil.

“All they did was rehydrate the contents of the ink sack with ammonia and voila, ink!”

No. you can’t “rehydrate” with ammonia, only water, which obviously didn’t work.

If it took ammonia that tells you that the ink does not degrade in water and requires a solvent that was not present in the fossil.

I’ll bet they could make “ink” with any number of solvents.

But, I am most disgusted with those who make a career of denying the evident majesty, extent and age of God's creation -- just so they can twist millions of man-hours of honest observation to fit the ramblings of a 16th-17th century word-twister.

The young-earthers are my brothers and sisters in Christ. I think they wrongly interpret the Bible and, for the most part, don't understand science, but I believe that they are sincere and well-meaning.

I may disagree with young-earthers on some issues but the things that we agree on are much important.

You are bothered by the same thing I am. I don’t have an answer, it just seems odd. BTW I am a former biology teacher, so I do understand how fossils form.

I wonder which components remain. Melanin? Otherwise, it wouldn’t have the expected color (black in this case). I have tried googling, but come up with nothing helpful.

“Are you one of those people who still maintain, in the face of all the evidence, that they haven’t found dino soft-tissue?”

if by “evidence” you mean the wild conclusions and extrapolations that you “creation science” guys make up - ignoring actual research conducted by actual scientists, then yes, I believe I am.

It hasn’t happened. You just think it has because you don’t understand the big words real scientists use. It’s ok, not everyone gets to be a scientist. Just ask the guys at your “creation science” institutes, they’ll know what I mean.

Sir, Are you questioning the truth of the Bible?
______

Yes. I am questioning the literal truth of the Bible, which is way different from saying that timeless truths cannot be found therein.

“I wonder which components remain. Melanin? “

I don’t know, the article didn’t say.

I suppose one could start with modern-day octopus ink and presume that it would be an evolutionary precursor to that, and probably similar.

That's why I looked up what's in squid ink:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cephalopod_ink

Cephalopod ink contains a number of chemicals in a variety of different concentrations, depending on the species. However, its main constituents are melanin and mucus. It can also contain, among other things, tyrosinase, dopamine and L-DOPA,[5] and small amounts of amino acids, including taurine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine and lysine.[4]

“That micrograph is suspiciously familiar. It’s archaebacteria.”

I’m not thinking he cares what the picture is actually - he just thinks that a picture that could be anything proves his argument. This is a common trait of wannabe science types like the entire “creation science” cabal. They don’t understand the time effort and research it requires to become a real scientist they think all research comes from Google.

Squid ink is intense stuff! It would most likely color any mineralization.

This passage is not creation science:

Isa 45:18
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else.

A few things to consider:
1. God himself that formed the earth and made it (bold statement that, tough for one of us to pull off, as we are well aware).
2. He created it not in vain (personal entity with a reason)
3. He formed it to be inhabited (he made a universe for His created entities to enjoy).
4. I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else. (bold statement that, top of any potential heap).

Try going for a drive on a winding oceanside road with the windows down. Consider the processing your organism manages that brings the joy of racing your car with the radio cranked on your favorite song. Wind in your hair, G-Forces pulling you as your car hugs the road and you push the limit of the machine you command.

He has gone great lengths to bring your existence special meaning. Stop denying His magnificence.

I’m not a chemist. I was hoping someone here could tell me. It seems to me that the components are all organic and should degrade over that period of time. However, perhaps in some way they were preserved. I just don’t know.

The main componant of squid ink is melanin. Melanin is organic, and if found, it is not fossilized by definition...because it’s still melanin! Turns out, they are finding melanin in the fossil record...in dinos, squid, “ancient” birds, etc. See the following for more:

Did creationists predict that would happen?

How does this disprove evolution?

“He has gone great lengths to bring your existence special meaning. Stop denying His magnificence. “

It is the “creation science” folks that deny His magnificence. They require some sort of scientific proof (but He did not see fit to equip them with the faculties to actually discover anything of value) that He exists.

So, friend, do not deny that He gave (at least some of) us wisdom so that we would use it to explore the universe He created. If you refuse to use your God given gifts, that is between you and Him at a time of His choosing. So in other words, wag your finger less, think a little more.

Classic projection. You wouldn’t understand the historical sciences if they came up and bit you on your rear end. Why don’t you read a few books on the same and get back to me when you have finally learned what all the big words mean. Until then...
