Les Paul has died at age 94. His electric guitar designs and innovations were central to the development of rock guitar artistry beginning in the early 1950s and continuing to this day. He was playing to the very end, too, in small groups in New York clubs.
So long to a great one...

Les Paul used to play on the the morning Arthur Godfrey show. I remember that from when I was a little one, eating breakfast with Mom, watching TV. Or was it on radio, too?

Sorry to hear it. He’s been working regularly. I’ve heard him from time to time on a Chicago all night show at 4AM saying that the show was done, now it was time for him to party.

My left shoulder is a bit lower than my right one.
One of the great Americans who will live on for generations and through the generations thanks to the gift of his work. Whether one plays a guitar or simply enjoys music, we all owe Les Paul our thanks and appreciation.

RIP.
When I was a kid listening to my parent’s records, one of my faves was a 45 RPM by Les Paul & Mary Ford that had these songs on it:
My Baby’s Coming Home
Sleep
Vaya Con Dios
Lady of Spain

When he walks through the gates of Heaven and they offer him a harp he’ll just smile and say, “No thanks, I brought my own instrument.”

Right. Mary Ford was the wife of Les Paul, and they performed together for many years. This Wikipedia entry is pretty informative:

"How High the Moon"--my fav in early 50's as a sr. in HS in TX. Sorry to hear this; but glad he had such a long life and was able to play into his late years.

His first prototype, solid-body electric guitar was made out of a railroad tie.

My guitard (bass players’ nickname for guitarists) has an ‘81 “TV yellow” Les Paul that sounds incredible. He gripes about the weight too though. He also has a ‘95 Gold Top reissue, and I think it’s even heavier.
Goodbye to a true pioneer.
I am reminded of a Pablo Casals story. Pablo was interviewed at the age of 92 and asked: “You have been known as the world’s greatest cellist for decades, you are 92 years old, and yet you still practice 6 hours a day. May I ask why?”
Pablo’s answer: “Because I feel I am making progress.”
Pablo lived to be 96.

I used to have one when I was a kid - freakin' awesome sounding. I still have the serial # written down here somewhere so I can track it down and buy it back from the dude I sold it too...
