A 26-year old Greek woman has become an overnight national hero after setting fire to the genitals of a 23-year old drunken Briton who allegedly tried to sexually assault her in a crowded bar.
The unidentified woman from the fiercely proud island of Crete won herself even more praise by doing the right legal thing turning herself over to police and the courts to be put on trial for what she claimed was her "right to self-defence". ..
According to a police statement issued last night the incident occurred at a club in the notorious coastal resort of Malia, which is dominated by young Britons seeking all-night revelry. It alleged the Briton took down his trousers and started waving his genitals at a number of girls...
After asking him to stop harassing her, the police said, she poured the alcoholic drink Sabucco on his genitals (an Italian brand type of Greek ouzo or French Pernod drink). This again allegedly failed to stop his advances, so the woman seized a lighter and set fire to the alcohol-drenched genitals, local press reports said.

Yep, good for her!
He put himself in this position. Being drunk was his choice. The situation would never have arisen if he hadn’t been. Isn’t it heck when the consequences are unpleasant? Nobody wants consequences. [This was a very harsh consequence, but that’s life.]
Great Balls of Fire!
Also Canea. Ancient Kydonia/Cydonia.
Mallia is about 24 miles east of Heraklion/Iraklio, the largest city on Crete, and is the site of the third-largest Minoan palace. I went there once to see the ruins, and fortunately did not see any British tourists.
Understatement!! LOL!!!
If only Paula Jones had some Sabucco.
Beware of Greeks bearing Bics.....
Iraklion looked like Beirut when I was there.
I couldn’t believe such a major city looked like that, and I’m not talking about the actual ruins, either.
Of course, the perennially enfinished nature of Crete construction gives the entire island that overall “ruin-y” look.
Still, sitting by the water in Xania, drinking retsina (sp?) and cheap Amstel beers does have its own, unique charm.
The article states he also fondled her and forced her to touch him. Verging on if not over the line of sexual assault.
Would have been entirely appropriate for a few good Greek men to kick his testicles up into close proximity to his tonsils, so why not let the lady handle it herself?
I have been pretty drunk in my day, but I would never indulge in such treatment of a female, much less a lady.
again, if a man did this, he would not be hailed as a hero. inconsistent standards
Just curious. You think a less-attractive women shouldn’t also have the right to defend herself?
I applaud this young lady’s actions. He got what he deserved. A kick in the nuts would not make him think. He would just do it again. Now, hopefully, his ‘manhood’ will never be the same. I’m very very glad this happened to him.
Well heres where we differ. I believe in self defense, which naturally includes armed self defense. If this happened just this way in the US, I would have expected her to use whatever means to protect herself, up to and including deadly force. In other words, shoot the bastard if he wouldn’t stop.
You sound like a liberal who condemns someone for shooting a burglar in their home at night because “they should have run outside to the neighbors to call the police”.
Based on the limited information we have, you’re both right.
This was malicious. I hope he sues.
the attractiveness of the person ‘defending’ themselves is irrelevant. it’s a case of scale.
would it be ok for a man to shoot a woman that slaps him? of course not. what if he just burned her? after all, she assaulted him and he defended himself. what if he just broke her arm? would that be ok? how about punching her?
if you think burning someone for being crass is ok, you really need to rethink that position the next time you argue with a clerk at a store. if they were using your mindset, they could hose you down with lighter fluid and set you ablaze since you were offending their sensibilities.
Sorry, FRiend, I disagree with you again. The guy ‘forcibly fondled’ her, according to the article, and failed to stop his advances, after being asked repeatedly to stop. She has every right to defend herself against his repeated unwelcome advances and from being ‘forcibly fondled’. As far to whether her action was appropriate, or whether it went beyond what is considered appropriate, that will be decided by the authorities. I applaud her actions, as it obviously prevented further aggression on his part. I do not think she did anyhting wrong.
The charges were levelled after reports claimed that the assailant's genitals suffered considerable damage, requiring that he remain in a private clinic in Malia. Travel operator sources at Malia said his treatment is being covered by his travel insurance. The name of the clinic is not being disclosed and is under discreet police guard, police sources said.
However, the magistrate and prosecutor also unanimously agreed to set the woman free pending trial, an indication that they accepted her argument that she "acted in justified self-defence".
A small crowd of bystanders outside the Heraklion hospital applauded and shouted "bravo, bravo", as she was rushed away under police escort.
Legal counsel for the woman said that at Friday's hearing the court may either issue an immediate verdict or else might postpone for a future date. This will depend on reported plans by the woman's lawyers to also take legal action against the Briton, as soon as he recovers.
