Mallia is about 24 miles east of Heraklion/Iraklio, the largest city on Crete, and is the site of the third-largest Minoan palace. I went there once to see the ruins, and fortunately did not see any British tourists.
Iraklion looked like Beirut when I was there.
I couldn’t believe such a major city looked like that, and I’m not talking about the actual ruins, either.
Of course, the perennially enfinished nature of Crete construction gives the entire island that overall “ruin-y” look.
Still, sitting by the water in Xania, drinking retsina (sp?) and cheap Amstel beers does have its own, unique charm.
