Congressman wants government GPS in cars

An Oregon congressman says he wants to test having a government GPS unit in every car so a tax could be imposed on the miles driven.

The proposal, H.R. 3311, which calls for a test project costing $150 million-plus, was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.

"Oregon has successfully tested a Vehicle Miles Traveled fee, and it is time to expand and test the VMT program across the country," he said in a statement on his website. "A VMT system can better assess fees based on use of our roads and bridges, as well as during times of peak congestion, than a fee based on fuel consumption.

"It is time to get creative and find smart ways to rebuild and renew America's deteriorating infrastructure," he said.

His plan calls for the Department of the Treasury to study the idea with test GPS-equipped car projects in every state.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.

You get what you vote for. Unfortunately there are too many ignorant voters who do not know this. I seriously question are there ANY politicians in Congress who are on our side???

This supposedly makes certain that all of those electric cars on the road pay their “fair share” of equivalent taxes. However, not many people believe Earl when he says this will be in place of a gasoline tax.

Great idea.

Some putz from the Nevada DOT suggested this last year when it first heated up in Oregon. The idea was retracted within 24 hours due to public outcry.

Good thing. I drive nearly 900 miles throughout Nevada every ten days. I can't even imagine what my GPS tax would look like.

I DETEST these limp-wristed, money-grubbing socialist worms!

(My apologies to worms...)

Wait until Gang-Green figures out that this plan would tax lil clown cars as much as a one ton 4x4 pick-up truck that gets 8 mpg!

Between stuff like this, the flag@whitehouse.gov snitch line, etc.; Why don’t they take this just one step further, and assign a government agent to stay with each and every ‘regular’ citizen 24-7 and report on their every move.

And just imagine, cities won’t have to pay for cops to monitor speeders, the chip will automatically track how much you speed, and send you a bill.

That’s a simple one.

Older gas guzzlers owners will be dinged a carbon tax at registration renewal time.

See, there’s always an “innovative” solution.

I firmly believe that Orwellian schemes like this GPS deal promoted by totalitarian-minded politicians like this congressional twit, Blumenauer, should be shouted down by a free people in a democratic society.

Congressional Democrats are intoxicated with power and trying to make their extreme leftist fantasies all come true while they hold that power because they have to know (some of them, anyway - Pelosi is the exception) that it is not going last past the next federal election in 2010. Americans are quickly becoming fed up - and with good reason. This is truly government run amok.

Government GPS units in every car sold so the feds can 'monitor' our travel distances and tax us on them? Outrageous!

HA, another benefit. The hits just keep on coming.

-Last night you made it home in 25 minutes - this means you were speeding over half the distance. Your fine $500.00.
The amount has been automatically deducted from your account at FEDBanc.

Thank You.
