Senate confirms Sotomayor, first Hispanic justice
The Hill ^ | 08/06/2009 | J. Taylor Rushing

Posted on 08/06/2009 12:20:10 PM PDT by Pyro7480

The Senate on Thursday sent Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court with a modest display of bipartisan support, making her the first Hispanic justice and only the third woman to serve on the high court.

The 68-31 vote held few surprises, as a small band of Republicans joined Democrats in confirming her 72 days after President Barack Obama nominated the former prosecutor and judge. Her confirmation paves the way for Sotomayor to begin assembling her staff and prepare for the court to convene in October.

I love america, where a mediocre intellect can become a Supreme Court justice because she’s a radical racist of the proper color.

Or when a Kenyan with a forked tongue can become president.

Six Roman Catholics, two Jews and one 86-year-old Protestant....Catholics make up a little more than 20% of the U.S. population while over half this country is mainline Protestant.

Consider: In 45 years, no Democratic president has put a single white Protestant or Catholic man or woman on the court....

....who is the least represented minority in America on the U.S. Supreme Court? Not Catholics, who have two-thirds of the seats. Not Jewish-Americans, who though 2 percent of the population, have 22 percent of the seats. Not African-Americans, who at 13 percent of the population have 11 percent of the seats. And not Hispanics, who at 15 percent of the population will have 11 percent of the seats.

No, the most underrepresented group of Americans -- nay, the most unrepresented minority, the largest group of our fellow citizens never to have had one of its own sit on the U.S. Supreme Court in the modern era is -- Evangelical Christians....

....Republicans should now be searching for highly qualified Evangelical Christian judges and constitutional scholars, women as well as men -- and, when falsely accused of being "anti-Hispanic" or "anti-woman," ought to reply: "What do you liberals have against white Christians, man or woman, not to have named one in 45 years?"

exactly.

Actually things are not that bad at all.

One old liberal is being replaced by an old liberal with a chronic disease which shortens life by 15 years. It could of been a lot worse.

In 45 years, no Democratic president has put a single white Protestant or Catholic man or woman on the court....

Out of five picks. Over the same period, the Republicans have had 11 picks. How many of those would you term "evangelicals"?

I think this refers to Latin Americans; Brazilians (mostly Portuguese descent) are usually lumped in with “Hispanics” or the more generic “Latinos.”

The point is that European Spaniards or Portuguese are not the “right kind” of Latins. The “right kind” must be leftwing, preferably dark-skinned (although Sotomayor is not) to indicate Indian or black blood instead of that ugly European background, and carry their Dem party card in their teeth at all times.

Since I don’t know whether you’re “not voting” or your “voting left” or voting
a third party I can’t say, except, you’ve made your mind up so
I guess you can break with the party. That’s fine with me. I want loyal republicans in all offices, not just the WH and the only way I do it is donate to individuals running for office that I like.

Second Hispanic Justice. Justice Cardozo was nominated by Herbert Hoover in 1932.

Cardozo never identified himself, or was considered by his contemporaries, to be "Hispanic." He was the first Jew appointed to the Supreme Court.

If we have to refer to Sonya as a ‘Latina’ shouldn't we refer to Michelle Obama as a Nigress?

I'm just asking what is the difference?

Africian-Americaness?

Her Blackness?

Look folks, she's going to be a total embarrassment to the hispanic people. When she writes an opinion, her ignorance will be front and center for all to see.

Miguel Estrada would have made a first class justice but he was sunk by the dems, instead, the hispanic community is stuck with a woman who is poorly educated and logic challanged as their first representative on the court.

Their problem, not ours, she's so ignorant that she will probably be in the minority most of the time and when she is not she'll be told to sit down and shut up by the white liberals.

This lightweight will have no sway. She may even push Kennedy the other way.

A smart one would have been far, far worse.

I agree. She may turn out to be an unpersuasive embarrassment. And she has diabetes, poor dear. I consider her a “briar patch” choice.

This is truly a historic day for fat women.

You’re right!

This is the first “woman of girth” to sit on (around?) the high court.

Portugal shares the peninsula with Spain. Why would it not also be ‘Hispanic’?

It’s the “Iberian” peninsula, not the Hispanic peninsula. And the left has a hard enough time dealing with white privileged Spaniards getting the benefits they intend for Central American Mestizos with dark skin, but haven’t figured out how to work it out.

That should read...

I want loyal republicans in all offices, not just the WH and the only way I do my little part is donate to individuals that I want to win, running for office.

You know something, Drill Thrawl, I think you are correct.

For a while, I thought Toomey was the real deal. Several things have caused me to question that, but this was the last straw. He lacks core values. He is not what he pretends to be. This has to have been a political calculation. He or his advisors must have reasoned that by issuing this statement, he would pick up more “moderate” voters than he would lose among the conservative ranks. But here in PA, we are smarting from the Santorum betrayal. He had to know or should have known this was not going to play well with the base.

The people that I know, and the folks in a conservative coalition to which I belong, are NOT going to tolerate this. I can hear them now and I can see their mouths agape, jaws on the floor. I can’t wait to attend the next meeting. I’m sure this will be the topic of discussion, unless he does something even more outrageous between now and then.

“Alexander will never get anything in Tennessee again.

He needs to go.”

I don’t think he’s planning to run again. Good thing....he wouldn’t get elected anyway. We DO need to think about who will replace him.
