Jesse Griffin, the Alaska blogger who Saturday claimed in an "exclusive" report that Todd and Sarah Palin were divorcing, will no longer work as an Anchorage kindergarten teaching assistant, school officials confirmed Wednesday.
Griffin's resignation followed revelations that the 49-year-old Griffin had posted (under the alias "Gryphen") sexually explicit advocacy of pornography and masturbation on his "Immoral Minority" blog. . . .
Griffin blamed "the Palin team and their minions" for discovery of his "Gryphen" online alias, which he says resulted in death threats and harassment. . . .

It would not surprise me to read that Obama is getting “thousands of death threats.” I suspect the same is true of many Presidents. I am sure you get all kinds of crackpots writing, posting, etc. I think the significance would be if he gets significantly more death threats than other Presidents have gotten. Let’s face it, there probably will always be lunatics out there threatening the President no matter who holds the office.

Free speech applies to every kind of speech, not just political. But it doesn't apply when it causes immediate and likely danger to others ("fire" in a crowded theater, incitement to riot, etc.). However, the concept of free speech is to be free from criminal prosecution for expressing your thoughts.
Freedom of speech doesn't protect you from civil liability in most cases. Parody, satire and clear opinion are good protections from civil liability, but after that if you were putting something forth as fact it's mainly only being truthful that will save your bank account.
